So i'm soon to be (a couple months) in the market for a revolver. I thought about a semi-auto but i'm just too interested in a nice single-action cowboy gun. I thought about Colt but their way out of my price range for the time being (about to get married)
So i wanted to see if anyone has some past with a Ruger Blackhawk. I tried a search but it was more or less a hit and miss. I'm looking at a Vaquero or Blackhawk in a .45colt. Or other brands if someone has a different opinion. If Colts gonna be the overall suggestion, then it'll just be saving saving saving haha.
Looking around the 5-600 $$ range.

Love my super blackhwak. I believe the vaquero will not take as hot a load. However, that's not really an issue if your interest is cowboy action shooting.

Both are great guns and have a different feel. Try them both and see which you like better. Or if you are like some of us, buy both!

Ruger Black hawks are great Revolvers. They stand the test of time for sure.Accurate and dependable.
Used can be had usually from starting around $275 and up at various shows/individuals etc. Ive hunted with and took my first 9 pt with a iron sight .41 mag Ruger NBH.
Over last 20 years Ive owned a pair of .41 mags both 6",a 10.5" bull Barrel in .44 mag and a 7.5 " in .45 colt -w- Bisley grips.(Very comfortable over the standard plowshare style grips I thought). All 4 were great revolvers for the purpose I had them.And I lleven say any one of them was better than the over priced BFR Lil MAx revovler in .454 I got from Magnum Research.(they used a Ruger frame to begin with anyhow.)
I currently use a Ruger SP101 2.25" in .357 for summer CCW.
I recently had another Ruger .44mag stainless that had the 4 5/8ths barrel but my best buddy just had to have it to match his .44 mag rifles...so $$$ its gone!

But get a Ruger and enjoy you'll certainly not regret it.
If you hunt go with the New Model BH or Super Model BH. If its cow boy stuff then try the Vaquero and such. Also notice the new slimmer grip frame on latter models as opposed to older models.

I have a Blackhawk in 357 and 9mm that I really like.

There is the "new" vaquero and the older models! The new ones have slightly smaller frame and thinner areas...they don't recommend stronger loads in 45 LC in them as the "old" Vaquero's will stand.They say "new" on side plate and have a lock in grip that takes a special tool.If you want stronger loads up to 44 mag pressure it would be better to just buy the 44.I shoot a old Vaquero but don't push bullets that fast.

My deceased Father-in law had the NBH in either a 4 5/8ths" or 5" barrel that was .45colt /.45 acp that he really liked. The wife had hopped to get it from him,but alas it wound up in his brothers hands and rightly so!

Thank you all for your inputs. Think i'm gonna run up to Cabela's today or tomm since it's down the street and check each out. Got a heavy lean towards the New Blackhawk 5.50" barrel .45LC.

But i thank all for the advice, didn't know if Rugers revolvers had a good background or not.

Ruger Blachawks are quality revolvers you won't regret buying one, I saw one years back in the gun shop that a rice farmer had shot. Brought it in because the cylinder quit rotating. Seems he had shot reloads out of it, thought he miss his target and when he tried a 4th shot it wouldn't rotate, come to find out he had 2 rounds stuck in the barrel and the 3rd was stuck partially in the forcing cone on the barrel and partially in the cylinder. The gun never failed and after removing the bullets and checking tolerances to be good we test fired it and it worked fine, farmer got it back and shot it for several years after shooting nutria.
