Would that be Tim Ballinger ("shorthair") up in Dumas? We hunted with him in late December.. Had a good time, I've been looking for pics this year too..

Pictures would be great. We have been getting some quail chick reports, looking good, but what about the panhandle pheasant hatch.
Any reports pheasant chicks or broods.

Heck, if you have $78, might as well drive another 2 hrs north and get all the KS birds you want on public land. TX cant lay a finger on what KS offers

Kansas has a Walk-in-Hunting Atlas that shows over a million acres of public hunting. You can go to Kansas Parks and wildlife website and get it. They will be coming out later this month with their anual bird report also. This tells you what part of the state will have the birds. At times I have done real well on the public lands.

We tried the Kansas walk in land two years ago.We hunted the west central plains area were all of the birds were suppose to be. We hunted for three days with six hunters and two dogs with only two pheasants and six quail for our efforts. All [censored] pheasants seen were downed. We even hunted food plots around lake areas. It was great country well managed but just no birds. We did see some great deer.

rofl only differance is the limit and weather.. Thats all, Texas and Oklahoma can hang with Kansas, ND, and SD.

If you haven't ever pheasant hunted before... get a good guide.. it will make the trip much more enjoyable and teach you a lot, so if you ever do hunt on your own your not hunting blind.

Best pheasant hunts are in ND late in the season once there is a lot of snow. It's cold but there isn't very many places for the bird to be so hunting action is fast. Just be prepared for highs around 5. last year limited everyday for 4 days. Saw around 50-60 roosters!!!

Talked to my nephew in Parmer county - he said there are tons of birds this year. If the weather holds it should be a banner year in the southern panhandle. Come on December.

I hunt Kansas for the opener in November and then hit the Texas panhandle a couple trips in December and early January.

Kansas is great but Texas is equal and sometimes better for pheasants. The limit is one less but the birds in Texas are big, fast and tough. I do like the quail in Kansas though.

If we could just get Christmas moved to March that would allow a lot more hunting in December. wink
