they will work in most cases... it's when you start getting into the river bottoms and all the sloughs and mess that the black gumbo crud has no bottom to it.

Ken, didn't you already say that you own a pick-up? And your lease is only 100 miles away, and it's relatively flat? Just drive your pick-up around the lease, and being only 150 acres, you can walk in to your stand. You can haul corn and deer bodies in the pick-up bed.
Sounds to me like you're already GTG.

Yep, already have a truck, which is what I've used for years to get to leases and do work. But driving it out there is tearing it up and it's getting scrathed up from mesquites. My last lease had "friendly" cows who liked to rub against it, which stratched it more. Plus it's my daily driver.
I think I'm heading down the 4 wheeler route. Now it's the decision of used or new. Knowing how we treat my brother's 4 wheeler - I'm looking at new ones.

I have both and the truck is more useful... truck pros warm in winter cool in summer dry when it rains hauls corn, t posts, tools ect I CAN go just about every place the atv will go
truck cons if it breaks you need a ride I have several slow leaking tires
atv pros yep they're fun yep you can get around good
atv cons you really need a place to store it you have to get it out and put it up every time if you leave it there you have to worry about someone stealing it

Lifted Electric Golf Cart - Will get you anywhere you want to go quietly! My group has used these for years. You can put a truck bed on back and haul some corn around if you need to. They do great in mud and I've crossed creeks a couple feet high.

I love having a 4 wheeler to get around on. There are places on my new lease that you couldn't get to very easily in a truck. Not without clearing out lots of brush anyway. but I've also got an old Datson 4x4 that I keep on the lease too. It sure is handy for hauling corn, protein, feeders, etc. It's also pretty handy on those cold rainy mornings.

I went from a ATV to a Jeep and then to a pickup. Pickup is by far the best option. And I leave it at the lease all season long so I have the option of riding out with someone else.
Here's what I bought: 89 Chev shortbed single cab 4x4 350EFI Automatic Brand new Maxxis Mudders all around Cheapo toolbox Black rubber bed mat
The truck has 120K miles, everything works, and it came with the toolbox and bed mat. $3000
Bought the mud tires with road hazard and free rotations and flat repairs for $650.
What type of ATV can you get for that price?
Oh yeah, the truck drives great and I can get 18+ MPG on the highway.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

I would probably rather have a lease vehicle but until I do I will continue to use my rhino. I look at it both will need maintence and upkeep. the vehicle will be something I would get more use out of so to me it seems the better way. My way of reasoning is a jeep or something I can use everyday while my truck is in the shop or to keep miles off of it or whatever. An atv I wont get the use out of it like I will a vehicle.

Went the ATV route. After spending a ton of time and effort trying to find a decent used vehicle and trying not to get screwed over I decided to get a new Honda.

Went the ATV route. After spending a ton of time and effort trying to find a decent used vehicle and trying not to get screwed over I decided to get a new Honda. I think you will be happiest w/ this route - it's hard to beat a 4 wheeler when the conditions get sloppy or when animals have to be pulled out of bad spots. If you didn't get a winch w/ the Honda I would suggest you consider it. I have never used the winch on my Kodiak 400 to pull me out (I've never been stuck), but I use the winch all the time - erecting deer stands, pulling downed animals out of ravines (a couple of times...), etc. Also use the winch all the time for hanging animals at the skinning rack. Congratulations on the new purchase, enjoy! David

Thanks David. No doubt a winch is my next purchase. These old bones need as much help as they can get.
I'm looking forward to this weekend to give it a spin at the lease.

My only beef with 4 wheelers is that if that is all that is used on the lease eventually your roads will shrink to the size of the 4 wheelers.
There have been a couple of places that wanted me to feed and I turned them down because their roads had shrunk to the point where you couldn't get a full size truck through.
Something the width of a Polaris Ranger or a Jeep is pretty much a minimum for me.
Outside of that a truck or UTV is just pretty much all around more practical.

Trimming back the mesquite trees is probably going to be a yearly thing, regardless what I drive. Atleast no more scratches on my truck. I have a small trailer I can hook to the back of the honda if I need carry some weight. One feeder is in a spot that is real tight to get my truck back to.
