my son is starting 4H shotgun sports this year but he needs a new gun cause your not aloud to use a pump. you are aloud to use a over under, side by side, and automatic. i heard that over unders are really good and even better than an automatic. why?

strange that pumps are not allowed If it was my kid I would get him a gas operated auto. It's a little easier on the shoulder and single barrels are a little more forgiving when acquiring target than an OU for young shooters.

fowlplayr do you think there more accurate? Not at all. IMO - No shotgun is going to be any more "accurate" than the next. I think the key to consistency is a gun that fits the shooter well. And patterning is always a plus, so that you can choose a choke that fits your application.

Fowlplayr is dead on but I think you would be better off with a 390/391 Beretta. In the long run it will save you some money because it seems all the kids that take to the 4H program and shoot clays a bunch end up with that rig.
With the stock shims you can get it to fit really well.
Good luck and congrats on getting the kid into shooting sports. By the way, the advantage to the o/u is 2 different chokes and being able to get your hulls without chasing them all over...if you get into reloading at some point.
I wouldn't get a cheap o/u the Beretta 686, Browning 4/5/625's on the bottom end. They will take the pounding of a high volume shooter that clay guys put thru their guns.
Don't let your ears hear what your eyes didn't see, and don't let your mouth say what your heart doesn't feel

Listen to Judd he knows almost every thing he is talking about. And I said almost, just dont listen to him about dogs, you might get one that cant swim JK Judd

See how many different guns he can shoot in the club before you decide.

Never gets old!
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes

Which 4H club is he in? I think the pump requirement is only in competition I would suspect. My son was in Dallas County 4H at Elm Fork, and there were kids that had pumps. When my son joined, he had a single shot 20 gauge. Elm fork would let him use their auto’s at no cost until he got his own, he got an AL 390. Check with the club you are in, they may have a gun you can use.
But you are really better off not using a pump, JMO. Your son will have more success with an auto or O/U, and it is really personal preference on which he would prefer. Would nice if he could shoot a while, try different guns, and see which he likes better.

I would avoid the yildiz brands. They are cheap and yes, an o/u but they just don't feel very well and the recoil is prevalent (i own one).
I'll go with everyone else and suggest if you need a semiauto, the 390/391 (urika) is one of the best semi auto's for the price. You can occasionally find them on sale, just call around to gun shops.
