Bought these Axis deer about 1.5 years ago as yearling bucks. What do you think about the one on left. His horn is growing straight down. What do you think will it correct it self next year? Or should we shoot it, worry it will not be able to eat if the horn grows to much more.

Yeah I would take him out. It looks to like there is something wrong with the pedicle maybe. He looks like the body size of an average 2 year old. He will be three when he sheds those antlers. Take him out now and get you some good meat in your freezer. If you need some more axis bucks, let me know. I will be catching some later this month. smile

If you want to keep him... dart him and then cut off the antlers.

If they are like that next year...well, they eat good.

Darting is a good way to kill him. His horns aren't going to grow any more this year and they will fall off naturally. If you kill him darting him you won't be able to eat him.

I am with don on that, either just let him be or set up a hunt. This way you don't have any chance of a complete loss.

Looks to me like he's already out of velvet.....so his antlers won't grown anymore this year. Just leave him alone and see if he corrects himself next year. He could have just messed it up by hitting a tree or something. It might be fine next year.

You could let some one pay to harvest him if you don't need the meat. That would be a diff mount and you could re cover the cost of the animal.

I would not dart him. That would be a wast of time and money IMO.

Any way good luck.

I would be interested in selling him. One thing I will tell you is its not a walk in the park to hunt him, the axis on my place are tough you would work hard and may never get a shot, but I guess that is why they call it hunting vs shooting

Let me think about what I would want to sell a hunt for.
