I have a new lease in Crocket County outside of Ozona. I have some questions for anyone who has hunted this are. Mainly about the masas. Do deer travel the tops of these? I would think not. But just last week we say a monster Just over the top edge of one. Is it worth hunting them or just focus on the headers?

man i have a place about 12 miles from irran, i have always hunted the bottom land, well kinda, i placed my blind about half way down the hills. 90% of the deer i see and have taken have been in the bottoms. but i have seen a few really nice bucks travel half way up the hill, but mainly during the rut. they can see allot of country that way searching for a doe. one word of advice, dont place the main shooting port of you blind facing east or west, the sun in the morning and afternoon will white out your scope. because of the lack of tall trees. hope this helps.

Lots of big bucks lay up under the rimrocks for different reasons. Early in the season, deer lay up on the shady side of the hills for comfort reasons. When it gets cold, the deer will be on the side of the hill that first catches the sun and is out of the wind. Another reason they lay up there is that usually the wind is at their back and they are looking downhill and this affords them protection from both sides. The deer also use the tops of these mesas for feeding. Find a place they can get up easily and this creates a natural funnel, especially if there is a tank or windmill on the top of the mesas. Deer use the tops of mesas just like they use the bottoms and the headers. If there is a food source on top, you will find deer up there. Placing a feeder on top and looking down from the edge of the mesa to the bottoms and headers is a magical place to be. You see lots of territory. Or better yet, find a place easy to get up, place a stand on the edge and a feeder in the bottom and on the top. Bucks will be checking out both feeders when the rut kicks in.
