Going to go elk hunting in Colorado using my 30-06. What recommendations on weight, type, brand bullet to go get the job done?

I'd go with a 180-grainer. Federal's P3006R is loaded with a 180-grain Partition, and that's probably what I would buy if I was not a handloader.

I would use one of the following
1. 180gr Barnes Triple shock 2. 180gr Nosler Accubond 3 180gr Nosler partition

Federal Premium loaded with Barnes 180 grain TSX.

If it were me and I was shooting an 06 I'd be using 150 or 165gr Nosler Partitions, you have the option of busting up the lungs or taking out the shoulders with that bullet. You can push the 150 to 3100fps and the 165 to 3000fps.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

what ever your rifle likes the best. big fan of partitions and TTSX's
but you don't need 180grain... Unless its the only thing your rifle likes

Use whatever is the most accurate in your rifle with a minimum weight of 165gr or heavier. Accuracy kills!! If Ballistic Tips work best, use them. If the heavier ones are the most accurate they work as well as anything out there. Killed too many elk through the years to buy into the premium bullet maketing hype that is directed right at your wallet.

I agree with 30378, I would use what you can shoot accurately, I shoot 150 to 220 gr. bullets I have had my rifle for several years and have no problem with either bullet. Elk are big and can take alot of punishment. So use what you shoot and shoot well. Good Luck

hornady SST 180 grain. IMO hornady, by far, makes the best hunting bullets you can buy. They are super accurate, hard hitting, and stay together. Hornady is always my ammo of choice. All the deer, coyotes, hogs and varmints are just as dead and cost a lot less to get em that way than if i woulda bought the overpriced federal stuff

Any of those would work. I've personally seen the results with Remington's factory load with the 180gr Swift Scirocco in my uncle's latest bull. Chest shot, quartering slightly away, 150 yards at a light trot. Bullet destroyed vitals, broke the offside foreleg just below the shoulder blade, and stopped just inside the skin on the offside shoulder. When I say "broke" I mean pulverized about 2" of it, and it's not a small bone.
The bull went 50 yards and plopped over.
You don't need a crazy supermag for elk. Your .30-06 is perfect with a 180 gr. partition, scirocco, accubond, or just about any good quality bullet. My choice would probably also be the partition.

Another vote for the 180 grn Partition, Barnes TSX or MRX. Federal makes a vital shok load with each. Find out which your gun likes better accuracy-wise. The MRX has a slight BC advantage so it will shoot a little flatter.

Any good 180gr. bullet that shot the most accurate in my gun would do. I'd stay away from Thin skinned bullets like the ballistic tips. Swift-A frames are good. Winchester XP3 are good. Black Hills Gold makes some of the most consistently accurate ammo off the shelf. I think they load a 180 gr. tsx in the ought six. Just try out different ones. If your gun likes core Lokts, try the Core Lokt ultras. they are bonded. good luck.
