Does anyone know of a good mixture for fall planting? One that you can just brodcast over an area and do the rain dance?

anything you plant you will still have to at least clear the ground with a rake or tiller. the key is to get dirt to seed contact. do you have access to a tractor of any sort? If not go with a throw and grow seed mix, just be sure to clear the ground to the dirt with a hoe and rake. just my .02 cents. good luck this fall! I have had Austrian Winter peas come up before without much prep at all.

Here lies the problem. I just got a 205 acre lease in a prime location in Parker Co. 1st- I do not want to go in and start a bunch of construction on the place right before the openning of Bow Season. 2nd- There are cows on the place! There is some places that are bare dirt and I was just thinking about buying some seed and just brodcasting it in the dirt for this fall. I normanly will prep the area and fence it off, deer and all, untill it is mature. But getting this lease took longer than I thought so here I am last min trying to get something going for this fall, so I am all ears for advice!! Thanks!!

In that case since you do not have time to fence it and have cattle I would throw some winter wheat in the dirt patches come the end of september and pray for the best.

I think I've heard clover can actually cause cattle to bloat and die.

This is very true. Ask your landowner if this area grows winter grass, rescue grass or burr clovers naturally...if so then maybe just add some fertizer to the natural areas and go with that. Fertilized natural growth will be more pallitable to game and cattle too. If you are looking for just a draw to hunt over and not nutrition then plain old ryegrass will grow just about anywhere you throw it without covering it all or mix in oats, ryegrass and wheat and throw it for variety and a better chance at getting something up. I don't think the landowner or his cattle will object to anything you plant on the place as long as it does kill any of his livestock.

Clover will cause bloat if consumed in large amounts. There is only 10 or 12 head on this place and there is about 20 acers that is planted in oats every year. The areas that I want to plant right now are only about 1/4 acre each max. So the cow can not eat too much of it. Also I forget one type of clover has less of a chance to cause bloat.

From what I have been told is that cattle turned in on clover pastures for the first time stand the best chance of bloating...and those grazing it as it grows will be eating it in smaller quantities and not as likely to bloat. Also introduces clovers are not quite as bad as native or burr clovers. Call and ask the guys at Turner Seed Co. about the clovers though.

You did have to say burr clover didn't you! lol. Man I hate that stuff! I agree with what you are saying. I just wish I could have got on this lease sooner so I would have had time to get everything set up. I just don't want this to be a waisted planting. It is, IMO, the most important time of year to plant!

If the land owner is plowing and planting 20 acres pay him to plow over and you throw out some seed on the smaller spots and then cover them or just buy him the seed and pay him to do it. Save you time and the deer are used to him anyway plowing and planting the normal field.

I wish I could. It took a little talking to get on this place. The 205 acers is owned by man 1. The man with the cows is man 2. The man that plants the oats and owns the place to the west is man 3. So fallow me here, man 1 and man 3 leases the grass out to man 2. Man 3's wife doesn't alow hunting, "tree huger". Wife has man 3 plant the oats just for the wildlife in the area. Man 2 just opens the gate between man 1 and man 3's place to move his cows. Everyone gets along and there is no hard feeling between any of them. So you can see where this is going! lol

Lets just say I put up my feeders and a tree stand Tues and Wend. As soon as I start getting the pictures inn I will show you why I was so persistant, two years, on getting this lease. Now I must keep everyone happy so I can stay on it!! The owner of the property and I and the man with the cows know that I am hunting the property. The man to the west and his wife do not know I am hunting the property and they hate the people to the south because they hunt. So I must keep everyone happy and act like a gost!! I do not exsist! You know what I meen? This place has not been hunted in over 20 years!! Seriously!! And the ranch to the north covers from I-20 to the Parker and Hood county line and all they do is dove hunt and have a huge high fence game ranch on the place.

I would not be posting any pics or talking to much about it...lol...your honey-hole will get public if you get my drift. I would take a camera and book on birding with me at all time so you have an alibi! Hope your feeders have a stealth setting.

Feeding the wildlife is my hobbie, I love wildlife photography, and do not even own a gun! My two favorite movies are Bambi and Scarlet's Web! I do not know who you are or what you are talking about! You must be a crazy person or on drugs! I am proud to say I am a "Tree Hugger"! lol

I am a Tree hugger though, you could not pry my hands from that tree till my safety vest is on and my bow is secure!lol
