I hunted right outside of Bedias at my buddy's place for about 10 years.

Really beautiful area, but terribly over-hunted by locals and very tough to find bucks that are older than 2.5 or 3. The area I hunted was a PRIME example of a spot that needed ARs. They just implemented them, so I would assume it'll get better in the next few years.

In a decade of hunting there pretty hard, I didn't take a single buck. Saw plenty of small ones, but none that I would shoot. Tons of hogs there too.

Grimes County overall is actually pretty lousy for big bucks.

The population is solid though - so if you want to take a couple of does with your bow or during the Thanksgiving weekend, you'll have no trouble.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but it really is a pretty tough area to hunt for bucks unless all of your neighbors cooperate. None of ours did at all. I'm actually fairly certain a lot of them shot deer year-round and didn't really care about the laws.

But like I said, beautiful area and lots of does and hogs.

I hunted right on the Waller/Grimes county line for about 3 seasons. Same results as Cameron00. Way overhunted and lots of young bucks and doe.

There are some nice deer there but very hard to hunt. Every few years you will hear about a nice buck coming from that country but most of the locals keep it quiet. Several of the high fence ranches around there have had fence problems over the last several years. No telling what you might see at your feeders.

No telling what you'll see is right. Things I've seen at or around my feeder:

- Pack of collared dogs chasing hogs through my feeder area.
- Cougar (buddy shot, but hit it in the behind)
- Herd of cows (not ours)
- Buck up in tree half eaten (again, cougar)
- Fox
- Bobcat crawling up into my bow blind (while I was in it)

The creek bottoms in and around Bedias are corridors for traveling cougs, which is why they're seen in that area pretty frequently.

Really pretty area, just very tough hunting for bucks. ARs in their 2nd year there. Should help eventually.

yah AR's i think will do some good. last year we took a 5.5 yr old that scored 125 and a 2.5 that scored 110, kinda wish i would have let the 2.5 go, but with the neighbors we have, you cant be too choosy or you'll never get anything. Next yr. i think we will be sure to take only mature bucks

A 5.5 yr old that scored 125 would be the biggest buck any member of our hunting group, my buddy's grandfather who lived out there and hunted every day during the season included, had ever seen.

Ranch record was a 120 8-pt. I never even got any bigger bucks on camera at night, and I put them all over the place, not just at feeders.

were pretty fortunate we got to see quite a few decent bucks last year. I think the key is to hunt early. the 125 was taken the second weekend in bow season. Because the rut starts reall early up there.

I have hunted in Grimes County near the riverbottom for over 25 years and always believed that a huge buck was going to come by me one day. Well, it has never happened and I have spent many, many hours in the stand. The problem was too many hunters and heavy hunting pressure. We improved our odds by limiting the hunting to three hunters on 150 acres and implemented a no-shoot policy on almost all bucks except for culls (those with one brow tine or no brow tines, etc.)for the first five seasons. Yes, it was difficult in the begining to let very nice 8 and 9 point bucks go by, but it has paid off in the end. One hunter saw and took the first ever 10 point buck in year 6 (a 4.5 yr.old). I saw a nice 10 pt. in year 8 and took him the next year as a 5.5 yr. old. In November of this year, a 6.5 yr old 10 pt. was shot that had the heaviest rack to date. His inside spread was 17.5" We didn't have a scale to weigh him, but he looked like he weighed 160 pounds or more before field dressing. He was a nice 9 pt.in 2008, but he grew a lot in antler size between 2008 and 2010. He hasn't been scored, but we guess that he is a 130 class deer. There is no high fence - just enough acreage and light enough hunting pressure near us to take a chance on these bigger bucks getting by for another season or two. I have had unfilled tags for a number of seasons while waiting for the "big one" to come along. Until the 13" rule was implemented a few years ago, I shot cull bucks later in the season for meat or got a doe or two on Thanksgiving weekend. The sacrifices made for a long time have paid off. We see about as many bucks as does and have let some respectable 8 and 9 points grow up to be the nice 10 points. For the first time ever, I saw two 10 pt. bucks opening weekend that appeared to be only 2.5 years old. If these youngsters can make it for another 4 years or so, they should be respectable bucks. There are other 10 points that appear to be 3.5 years or older. And to think, we never saw a 10 point buck but once in 15 years of hunting before implementing the new system! I am not likely to pull the trigger on any buck smaller than the ones I have taken, unless they are culls, because we can't shoot most of the 8s, 9s and 10s and expect to see these deer mature. We have to be very selective. We have come so far from where we were. There is no doubt there are much older deer on the place because we have let a lot of bucks go by that should be 7.5 yrs old or older. They just don't appear where we hunt and we will have to change our hunting locations to get a chance at these possibly big and elusive ones. From my experience, the age of the deer is the number one factor in seeing more points and heavier antlers on the bucks. Food and genetics play a role too, but if the bucks don't live long enough to become mature (5.5 yrs or older) you aren't likely to see a really big buck in Grimes County. If you have a reasonably large tract to hunt and/or bordered by land not hunted, you may can try our strategy. It depends on your circumstances. I remember the days of having to shoot the first buck you saw because of the heavy hunting pressure. Most all of the young deer got shot and never had a chance to grow up and be the mature bucks we are seeing now. I dream of the day a B&C buck walks out (and gives me a shooting opportunity). I know, one in a million or so. I can dream!
