Just a heads up - Academy is having one of their two sales on dove loads 12 and 20 guage(don't know how long, I don't work there I just keep an eye out for it every year) it works out to about 20% of the cost per box or about $1/box. I just got two cases....now we sit and wait for opening day.

Bill, I was just at Academy on friday. It is $6.39 a box for field loads, and seems like $4.39 for the lighter game loads. Don't know where the $1 off a box came in...I didn't see it.

They had a back to school tabloid in the Sunday paper this morning. They had the Remington's @$6.69, every day low. I'll probably just get a few boxes at a time this year. I'm doing mostly NSTRA, and I don't miss in there.

I believe the sale is just on the Winchester 1 oz loads.

I just don't get good results with these lite load shells. The heavy dove load work a lot better for me. A few bucks more and I am much more satified with my shells.
The heavy dove in 20 or 12 is the better buy in Winchester or Remingtom.

I always got the remingtons at Academy, cause their cheap ones had 1 ounce of shot in the 20 guage.

Always take the 1oz over the 7/8 oz. Always!

After shooting sporting clays for many years and reloading probably over 50k shells I now hunt dove and bobs with 12 gauge reloads loaded with 3/4oz. of 7 1/2 shot, and 15 grains of promo (about 1050 to 1100 feet per second). I guarantee you that I drop just as many birds with this load as anyone else does with hot 1 1/8oz 12 gauge and 1oz 20 gauge field loads. Hot shells are really not necessary. Its the shooter not the arrow. Most of my friends who shoot sporting clays never use more than 7/8 oz in either 12 or 20 while hunting doves or bobs.

Now blue quail are different. Tough little devils. For blues I use 1 1/8oz of #6 at about 1250 to 1300 feet.

You know I guess I am from the old school. I have never been into SC and I believe what you tell me. I have always just hunted Quail and Dove and thought I needed all the help one could get. I pattered my gun and had a more dense pattern with the 1oz than the 7/8oz plus my gun handles the 1oz better.
You SC guys do a lot of popping per day and I kinna thought the light loads you shot helped you at days end on the old shoulder.
