Finally got a lease in between Rocksprings and DelRio sounds good and a chance at some exotics too. Anyone have any success stories on the area?

Well anywhere down there will be good. Plus exotics you got one heck of a deal!

I shot a 38" Axis in full velvet last season out of Carta Valley about 42 miles southwest of Rocksprings. They are everywhere down there. I will send a picture in a little bit.

Here he is. He was walking dead away from me, so this is not a gut shot. He came out right at dusk and I had about 2 inches behind his ribs to shoot. He dropped like a rock. We are on 10,000 acres down there, so to see him was somewhat lucky. We killed another one earlier last season that had 27 inch horns. Mine weighed in at 252 lbs.

nice buck bulltide! generally, you in open ranges where axis and whitetail overlap, the quality of axis antlers will be alot better than whitetail antlers. out in the hill country, i see 30+ in axis quite regularly, but i have only seen one whitetail that i think would go 140 B&C

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Thanks guys. He was a beaut. The Axis in Edwards county are quite large. The white tails probably won't score above 120. Most of the deer are hill country size, but there are a ton of them. I think there was a buck in the pics with the Axis. That is a pretty good deer for Edwards county. I actually saw an Axis that last weekend that was out of velvet and bigger than the one I shot. I couldn't set my beer down in time to get a shot, but man he was huge!

That is awesome Rockman. Send the pics of the valley. There is nothing like an Axis deer. Is he going on your wall?

We are along 377 a few miles before you get to FM 2523. We are pretty far back from the road. Have you hunted that area before?

Good luck. At night sit outside and listen for the Axis to start whistling. They will whistle back and forth to each other for about 45 minutes until they meet up. They like the warm weather, so you might see them when you are Turkey hunting. Oh yeah, there are freaking Turkey around every corner in that area.

It is pretty cool when they start to whistle. You should see quite a few turkeys. Good luck.

Here is another buck we shot in Carta Valley. You will be pleased. None of our big bucks showed up until the rut, so don't get frustrated if you don't see any until then. Maybe it is how that area is.

They are between South Texas and Hill Country deer size. Hopefully these pics will show up. These are pretty good for that area. The good thing is that there are a ton of deer down there.

TNMudd - They were still in groups? Mother nature at her finest. Always trying to mess us up. Ha, they do get big down there. You will never be short on meat. If you see an Axis, you will know it. They don't breed at the same time a whitetali does, so if you are going to shoot an Axis doe, check her belly to see if she is pregnant.

Bulltide the pic didnt show up again.. i meant that the turkeys were still in groups i dont know if it was still early or if it was the rain that threw them off because it was pretty much flooded everywhere. Have u hunted turkeys in the spring around there if so when did u have the most success

Hhmm. Not sure wtf happened. I will try later. right, the turkeys. When I hunted them in the Spring, I stayed one pasture over from the roost. There aren't many big trees for them. What they will do is shutter down in the larger trees that have a big clearing in front of them. There are so many rocks and hills, they will typically congregate in the thick flat areas.
