Which shotgun would be a better choice for dove hunting? A Remington Sportsman 58 with a 28 in modified barrel that shoots 2 3/4 shells or a Mossberg 835 with a 24 in barrel with a modified choke that can shoot 3 1/2 shells?

The Sportman for several reason. It's an autoloader, has the right barrel length and choke in my opinion and there is no need for anything bigger than 2 3/4's on dove. If you do take that 835, make sure and test the magazine plug with 2 3/4 in it so that you can't put anymore than 2 in there. I'm sure the magazine on that thing is pretty long. Now, if your hunting a roost, you can hunt with the 24 okay, but I wouldn't want anything under 26 personally.

Chamber lenth has no bearings on the decision since you would only use 2 3/4" shells. Go with what feels better and works better for you. Personally I'd go with the autoloader unless it was totally felt wrong and I was good at using a pump. However for me it's been so long since I've used a pump that I'm not comfortable with them anymore.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side.

I shot plenty of dove during teal hunts with 3" #4s last year would y'all be mad if I ACTUALLY did that??? As an 835 owner, I'd say take the autoloader until it's time to knock down ducks and geese. Then bring the pig.

Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

2 3/4 inch steel 6's work great for teal and dove.
