I am going to buy my grandson his first deer rifle for his 13th birthday in 243 caliber and would like your opinion on which gun. Either a savage combo or a weatherby vanguard?

My cousin bought a Weatherby Vanguard .243 last year and put and 4-12 Nikon on it. He is getting 1 - 1 1/4" groups with it shooting 100gr. Hornady ammo. A nice shooting gun.

My sister shoots a Savage in .25-06 and it is just as accurate. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I think saying "I shoot a Weatherby" sounds better though.

Savage! Extremely accurate and lots of after market parts available for when he grows up and may want to change something.

Savage model 16, non-combo.

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

Savage

With the right handloads I bet it will shoot 1" @ 100yds. or better. Most of them do.

Model 16FHSS SKU #17963 is the one I would buy for him. Accutrigger, Accustock, Stainless barrel (that you could paint if it is too shiny), hinged floor plate. All it needs is a quality scope, rings, and bases. That will be a rifle he can use the rest of his life.

I'll be buying one just like if for my daughter in about ten years. banana

Of the 2 choices, defintely Svage but NO COMBO. I have found that most of their combo scopes are of poor quality. The Simmins that came with my heavy barreled 22-250 couldn't hold zero to save it's life and the windage adjustment was oppposite to what was labelled. My is not an isolated instance with the scope either.

good luck to you and your grandson. I think he'll be happy for a long time.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

No combo of anything

Remington 700, Weatherby, then savage. Savage is ugly
