usually the TPWD will set up a fund for the family, but I haven't seen it yet. I emailed TPWD but most likely won't hear from them until monday or so. If I hear of a memorial fund I will post it.

Dont know if it is still true but years ago many insurance companies would not write life insurance policies for Federal or state game officers..Please post a specific fund for the wife and child if you run across it..Usually his hometown bank will set one up...

Prayers for his family

Yes, easton1025 you are correct, when I was working as a Federal Warden(SA), we couldn't buy life insurance with most companies, the Gov. had insurance set up for us, but it was very limited. Please post information on the specfic fund for the wife and kids. Thank God they got the man that shot him also.

=====================Update=======================

Saturday Officer Hurst would have celebrated his 34th birthday. He leaves behind a wife, a 4 year old son and countless friends and family. He was a man of great faith, and it is said that faith showed in the way he lived.

I personally did not know this officer but over the weekend I did an IBEP bow hunter class for 2 game wardens. It would have been 3, but one of those had to go down to assist with the investigation. You could see the hurt in their faces and hear it in their voices as we had open discussions on this.

Officer Hurst's services are schelduled for 11 am on Wednesday March 21 at First United Methodist Church of El Campo. Please show your support any way possible. And the next time you run across a game warden, thank them.

I will NOT mention the name of the shooter in this case. However, as an update, he was moved to Harris County (Houston) on Sunday and charged with capital murder of a police officer. I am sure additional charges of attempted capital murder, felony evasion as well as others will be filed.

It is always bad for everyone when things like this happen. Mine and Lora's thpoughts and prayers go out to this officers family, friends, and colleagues.

When I first read this post, I didn't realize that this officer was working in an area of such rampant poaching activity.

Since Lora and I have been in Fort Stockton on our hunts, some of our mail piled up on us. In going thru it, there were two copies of the Lone Star Outdoor News. In the February 23 issue, in the Game warden Blotter section, there is an item detailing the fallen wardens participation in apprehending a person, that was being pursued after shooting on of the decoy deer that TP&W uses.

In the article, it is reported that Officer Hurst, had stopped this same individual two nights earlier, for shining a spotlight from a public road. I wonder if there is a connection in all these incidents.

As some one else mentioned, GW's are the only LEO's that know going to to check out a camp or a vehicle, that the people they are fixing to be dealing with are also carrying firearms.

Justin, a great guy, and one guy who never thought he was above the law when he went to work. He'll be missed. He was a great asset to the community as well for speaking to various organizations, civic groups, and the kids. I was just speaking with him a few months ago about poachers during dove season, and to have this happen to him.

It was a sad day for El Campo, and an even sadder day when we realize he left behind a family including a 4 month old son.

To an honest person, may he rest in peace.

Thoughts and prayers for his family. Being an Aggie myself, it pains me to hear of another's Aggie's death, especially since he was just doing his job and was killed by some poachin jackass!! The poacher needs a long fall from a short rope IMO.

The 100 CLUB is another way you can give money for Justin Hurst. They gave his wife a $10,000 check right away to help with any costs. They are a great club.
