I would run a corn feeder like you have been, and then designate a seperate area you are NOT going to hunt for the protein feeder. Mixing with corn should be fine. Also make sure you have water nearby the protein station. Good Luck.

We will mix 50lbs of corn and 50lbs of protein and pout it in first, then go straight protein on top of that when we are first putting out a feeder..... and pour a little corn directly under it so they'll let curiosity get the best of them.

I HAVE MINE IN THE SAME PIN AS MY CORN FEEDER, I WOULD DO STRAIGHT CORN FOR 50LBS, THEN 10LBS PROTEIN TO 50LBS CORN, THEN 20LOBS PROTEIN TO 50LBS CORN AND SO ON UNTIL YOU ARE AT 50/50 THEN START GOING THE OTHER WAY UNTIL FEEDING STRAIGHT PROTEIN. ESPECIALLY IN A WET YEAR IF YOU PUT TOO MUCH PROTEIN IN UP FRONT THEY WON'T HIT IT. GOOD LUCK.

FWIW...we've been feeding PCP this year with excellent results...PCP is basically an equal mix of peas, corn and protein...

IMO. If you put your protein feeder inside a pen that has deer coming to it, most likely they will start eating the protein. I have done this on the last two leases that I hunted. No need to mix in the corn, unless it makes you feel better.

Anytime is a good time to start but at my place they are taking less now then anytime of the year. We just put ours out straight. If they need it they will find it. Once they use it they know what it is and where its at. You will see them devoure it at certian times and sometimes they will barely touch it. Just make sure Dec-May they have as much as they want to. Its all great all summer long for the mamas to make milk

When I first put my Protein feeders out I scattered about 25lbs of corn on the ground around the feeder and the deer were eating the protein in just a few days. Never had to mix the two.

I get mine at Gorman Milling for $7.15 a 50lb bag. It's 17% protein.

I think deer can only digest 18% the rest they poop out. I use cattle feed because of cost. I would rather buy all they can eat and never run out then feed the high dollar stuff and run out

Pilgrim's put out an 18% that is persimmon flavored that our seem to have a liking for..might price it and try out different brands in small doses and monitor their consumption. Naturally it will vary from time to time, but you know something is up when your feeder empties in less than a week.

Right now I'm feeding a ton of feed every 3 to 4 weeks. The price we pay for good healthy deer... It usually drops way down after I get the winter food plots planted and start the corn feeders.

Guys it's not just about the % of protein. The "protein pellets" also have good amounts of trace minerals included. These are essential to helping with antler growth. Yes the protein stuff ie cattle feed helps but it is not as beneficial as the protein pellets. Also all protein pellets are not created equal. Compare the labels and pay attention to the %s of the trace minerals. This is where some of the pellet manufactures are skimping to make more profit. The other thing to consider is just because something has a high protein % doesnt mean it is digestable. There are certain things that are high in protein but are not digested very well by deer so they basically eat it and it runs out the other end and they gain very little from eating it. I use L&E feed because they never skimp on the ingredients going into their feed.

rtp I agree with you. The cattle feed is not the best option. Deer know what they need and they take it when they need it. I use this feed to keep body weights up during times the land dosnt provide. It is half the cost of deer feed. The land makes big racks not some pellet feed. Deef feed should be supplement not there diet. If I could reason to put out a 2000 pounds a month of 7-12 a 50# bag every month plus corn plus planting food plots etc, I would. Plus in SE oklahoma feeds stores gear to cattle not deer. But I do understand where your coming from. My opinion is healthy deer grow big racks not protien pellets we keep a healthy herd
