I'm looking for some inventive ideas on scouting tools when hunting a new/foreign area.
I know about food sources, bedding areas, water source, scrapes, trails etc......
Do any of you use, for instance topo maps, elevation, moon phases or any other tools?

IMHO the best scouting tools you have are your feet. What looks good on paper doesn't always pan out in the field. Make some tracks and cover some ground if you want a realistic idea of where to hunt.

google earth maps are great...you can see funnels, pinch points, break in bottom land and ridges (easier in my location..pine vs hardwoods)..shortest distance between 2 thickets, old windrows if the maps havent been updates. If you know someone that could take you for a fly-over in a chopper it can be an education experience.
