I just got back from the lease, getting everything set up and stuff like that. As I was driving around the property I thought about how lucky I was that I was introduced into Deer Hunting at a young age and the fact that a lot of folks never even get a single chance to partake in any aspect of hunting. It is such a great aspect of my life and I have been so fortunate to have a Father that has introduced, passed down and supported this passion. So...who got you started or who would you say thank you to?

My buddies from A&M. Grew up in a very non-outdoorsy family, though from a very early age I was always fishing, hunting, etc. on my own.

My Best friends dad... He took us out in the woods and taught me everything. He no longer hunts...due to time... But I can see it in his smile when I tell him about all my deer seasons.
I have been getting my friends into the sport and there kidos...Hopefully I can make in impact on someones life As my Friends dad did for me.
Now if God will grant me with a son...and hopefully he wired my daughters head to take up hunting.
But if Hunting is not there thing...so be it. I will not force it on them.

Yep, good ol' Dad. Shot my first deer in 1968 sitting in his lap in a box blind. Pretty sure he was a lot more excited about it than I was.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Well dad got me huntin frogs, dove and quail in that order but he didn't deer hunt. SO he got me hooked up with his friend Orvil Schienkel(also my scout master) it was a working arrangement, I helped set up the deer camp, cooked some and did a LOT of dishes... in turn I got to hunt!
To this day Mr Schienkle is probably one of the best hunters I've ever met, I honestly believe he could count cou -- coup -- (sp) on a deer.
Thanks! Mr Schienkle (and dad) for passion I hope I never loose!
Edit: I said "one of the best" I meant to say THE BEST!

My father never took me hunting with him. I don't remember him deer hunting more that 5-6 times himself and he was invited by others to hunt on their land. I bought my first rifle myself when I was a freshman in high school. It was a Sears JC Higgins .22 semi-auto with tube feed. I taught myself to shoot and got pretty good with that .22. I bought my first shotgun when I was 20, a Mossberg 12 ga. bold action adjustable choke. Shortly after that I bought my first pistol, a western style .22. I have varmit and bird hunted most of my adult life but couldn't afford to deer hunt until I was in my late 50's. I have had to learn what little I know on my own, so I guess you could say I am a selfmade man. But darn ......how I do love it so. To answer the original posters question, I guess I would have to "thank the Lord" I didn't have to wait until my late 60's to start deer hunting. TB

my dad, my bro, some of the old farts on the leases over the years for treating me as if I were their own kid (better in some cases)...Remington, Browning, Ruger, CaseXX, Ford, Suzuki, Tasco & Simmons (early on) & Winchester Super X ammo, Moultrie...and as soon as I could legally hunt by myself...Summitt treestands!

I have to thank the Lord as well. He gave me an extended family of outdoorsmen / farmers. My Dad never hunted with me, but there was always someone to go hunting with around my Aunts farm in Indiana. But mostly, the Lord instilled a love of the outdoors in my heart from the get - go.

Nobody, my parents decided for me what interests I had which didn't include some sports and hunting/shooting. I just now got to start hunting back in 2008 because I bought some guns and find time to do it.

For sure would have to be my dad. I can remember many mornings getting out to the stand before daylight, which I didn't understand why at the time but I do now. I would go to sleep on the floor of the stand and he would wake me up to watch the deer at the feeder.
About the 3rd or 4th time we went out I got to see him take a nice 10 point. From there on out I was hooked. Every weekend I would beg him to take me.
Luckily I still have him around and we still hunt together. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I'd have to thank both my parents I guess. My Mom has never hunted but always enjoyed going to camp with us when I was a kid. She doesn't go anymore, and my Dad doesn't hunt as much as he used to, but growing up they had me out there all the time and there is nothing else I'd rather do now.

My ole Man in my formative years - then some older hunting buddies after that. Exposed my son to hunting at an early age but I never pushed it. He took it with a grain of salt. Now at 25 years old, he can't get enough.

Curt Gowdy, used to watch tThe American Sportsman all the time and dream of hunting. First deer was when my ex F-I-L took me to his lease and let me shoot a doe. First shot missed, 2nd shot dropped her. Shot her high and hit the spine. I was 22 years old.

My grandpa took me fishing with him when I was 4 or 5. He tried to get me to go hunting with him when I was a kid, but I didn't have much interest then (not sure why and kick myself these days for it).
As I got older, I started to develop the interest and my neighbor got me on my first deer lease a few years ago and has been helping me learn since.
