I think a guy on here is training a labradoodle. If you are looking for non shedding options you may want to try a Labmaraner. Half lab, half weimaraner. I have one and they are extremely intelligent dogs.
Back to your original question: I know poodles were used for hunting in Europe. Start googling and see what you find.

Im out on those mixed breeds. It's like a fish and Ski boat. You have to give up deck space for all the seating to accomadate passengers. You have to give up something to get something else. just not a big fan. IMHO

I think the non-shedding aspect can be a myth depending on the variety of the coat. I have seen quite a few Labradoodles and a variety on the coats and some owners say they do shed. I am not a fan but the people that have them love them....
A Lab and Weim mix should also shed not sure how they wouldn't

Those pointers (vizslas and weim)shed just like a lab. The only difference i can tell between my lab and my vizsla is the vizsla hair is much much finer and shorter, so it's not as noticeble on most surfaces, but you let my vizsla hug you with a black shirt on, it looks like you shaved your head.

What do you guys think about these dogs they dont shed Don't believe that they don't shed. They do. But MUCH LESS than a Lab's coat. For all the folks here that don't like Doodles because they are from "mixed parentage" ... just where do you suppose the original Labs came from? For that matter, the Standard Poodle predates the Labrador breed by a century and it was bred specifically as a waterfowl retriever. But don't let facts confuse you since your mind is already made up.

For me it is not that they are a "mix". I personnaly do not like the look. I work at an Animal Hospital, so I have seen my fair share of the "designer" dogs. I have to say a lot of them are adorable, but it seems as if they are coming up with a mix of everything..... I have spoken with clients that have paid 1500.00 for a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle and lets mention the miniature Labradoodle and Goldendoodle....sorry I find that a bit over the top....
I will say that most of the Doodles that come in are well behaved and calm even as puppies. The clients that have them love them and think they are great family pets. We see the Doodles often for grooming, most come in to be groomed every 6 - 8 weeks.

Cappy, thanks for the fact, but most of us already new that the poodle is the original waterfowl dog. Last time i checked, more labs had FC, AFC, MH, and GRHRCH titles than poodles or labradoodles. That is a fact. So,please don't try to tell me that this breed was made becasue of holes in the labs performance or something like that. It was made because some guy in Hawaii was allergic to dog hair. They wanted the temperment of the lab, and the non shedding coat of the Poodle. If I wanted a dog to walk around the ring, I'd get a poodle. There is a reason that labs are not only the most popular pet in the U.S., but also owned and used by most hunters today, not 100 years ago.
Do Delta Waterfowl and DU auction of Labradoodles at their events?

I had a VERY GOOD trainer (trained Lance Berkmans dog, and the Canada president of DU's dogs)Tell me that if I got a standard poodle he would train it for free just to prove to folks they are awsome retrievers.
But brushing that coat and getting out all the stickers is what I always seem to think about.

Thanks kdub. I'm not trying to be rude, but the first post was what do you think about them. Hell, my mind was made up when i ready the title. It's just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to one. Just like Cappy likes the Doodle.
But, if any of my buddies caught me hunting with something called a doodle, i'd hunt alone the rest of my life...

No one ever said that a poodle wasn't a good gun dog or capable. I've seen them at hunt test stomp a master level test.
