If any of your friends have a call collection, see if you can borrow a couple.
I loaned one to Judd and he's making it sing. this thread seemed to turn into I am looking to buy my first call...not just you moose just using your post as an example. I have many calls but was looking at buying my first acrylic and was asking about Cutt Down Game Calls

Echo is my favorite acrylic.
If I was you, I'd stick with one of the major makers.

I really enjoy mine. I visited with them about 6 years ago to get one custom tuned for my style. It is always my first choice.

The Cutt Down Boys came to Galyean's in the mall in Frisco back when it was Galyean's before Dick's bought them out. Those hands gave our oldest son his first duck call and showed him how to use it. I think they were in Athens or Corsicana at that time. That sticks in my mind to this day. We still have that call and it will kill a duck. I think he would be fine with a Cutt Down. I understand his desire to support a Texas company as well.
You make your own luck.

I blow a cutt down and prefer it to anything I have ever blown. Get you a D2 and learn to blow it. I have a bunch of duck calls but for my hunting and calling style the cutt down is the best for me. I carry a back up call in the boat at all times as well. Never know when youll forget your calls. I have had it about four or five years and have killed 150 to 200 ducks a year with it.

I don't have any of their duck calls, but I have been using a cutt down Goose call for 3 or 4 years now and have been extremely happy with it. I asked for a couple extra reeds for it last year and had them in the mail the next day.
