Got my puppy home last week (7 weeks). He is doing great and getting used to the new home. I was just wondering what everyone else's experience was at this age as far as drive. He will chase ANYTHING you throw but doesn't really care to bring it back. He is more content to sit and chew whatever was thrown (as expected). When did your puppy start returning things to you for another throw? Did he start on his own or did you have to train him to return?

Just curious to hear how different everyone's puppy experience was.

+1 nogeese

I had the same as you describe. Mine was also swimming at this age and actually before this age as well. He would sometimes bring it back and sometimes not but it was not hard at all to shape the return to me. So he did come on his own, most of the time.

Drive was apparent in everything he did. Playing, jumping, retrieving, was balls to the wall and it was interesting to see him be so reckless. Still like that today.

What breed of dog are yall talking about?

It's good to start praising them as soon as the object is in their mouth. You don't need to wait til they are all the way back to you with it.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Dtown, I would strongly recommend purchasing a retriever pup DVD . Keep in mind, at 7 weeks old, you got yourself an infant. It is like looking at Michael Irvin as a baby and asking “when should he start catching a football?” Some would even say 7 weeks is way too early to take pup away from Mamma. At 6 months, your pup is like a 7 year old kid still.

use a long lead to pull the puppy back to you gently with a lot of encouragement on "here" and "good dog." Do not take the bumper or toy immediately upon returning, just pet them and praise them. After 10 or 20 seconds of wildly petting, take the bumper/toy and throw again. You do not need to steady at this point just build lots of go. If the dog will not pick up the bumper simply walk over to the bumper put it in his mouth, pet and praise. Then just pet the dog as long as it is in his mouth but if he drops it, you stop petting him. By petting them only with it in their mouth and not taking it immediately the dog will run to you for the praise instead of trying to play keep away and it starts teaching them to hold it and to deliver to hand.If the puppy barely picks up 1 bumper do not throw another 1 and never throw more than 4 times. Try to always leave the session with the puppy wanting to do more and put the toy/bumper etc away for next time. Most important if your having fun then the puppy is having fun, try to always keep it that way and enjoy your new family member smile.

Thanks for tips guys. He has been doing really good the last few days. Tennis ball seems to be working the best. I've been throwin 2-3 times a day and I am getting him to return about 80% of the time. Also, he will sit before I throw EVERY TIME. I wasn't trying to make him, he just naturally sits as I prepare to throw and then takes off. Its GREAT to see. We are both having fun!

Also, don't over do it each session. Always stop when he's wanting more, not until he's tired of doing it.

Great advice here. Mine varied a little bit. Oddly enough, my house doesn't really have a hall that is more than 5' long. So, I did all of mine in the yard with a check cord. As soon as his mouth went around the bumper, I gave praise like you wouldn't believe and reeled him in gently with the check cord. Once I got him to me I would continue praise and petting for about 15 seconds or so. Once I was ready to take it, I always said give. He didn't understand that obviously at that age, but it conditioned him to where all I have to do is say give and his moth opens wide. You get the benefit of training two different things with pup at the same time without any confusion.

Now, a word about praise, if your not embarassed by other people hearing you, your not doing it right rofl. Seriously. You are convincing your pup he has just done the coolest thing he has or will ever do in his life, and that my friend will build drive and love for the game.
