I have been looking at the sportDOG SD-400CAMO FieldTrainer System for training my dog. This collar id good up to 400 yards is waterproof and has 16 levels of continuous stimulation and 8 momentary. I am a beginner at dog training and this is my first lab. Do yall have and thumbs up or thumbs down for this system?

Seems the SD can be good or bad...seems most guys who used them alot always recommended Tritronics or Dogtra when I was looking. I ended up with the Tritronics because they have a GREAT reputation for customer service and that is always worth something to me.

Plus, I had some BPS points to spend and they had the Tritronics in stock I wanted and didn't have the Dogtra so that made my choice easier.

I think Charlie wears a SD and Anthony hadn't had any problems out of it when I hunted with him because I remember talking to him about it.

Go with the Tritronic or Dogtra. They are the two I like best.

I looked at sport dog and I was almost convinced to go with it until I talked with a few guys that had been in this dog training for sometime and they said TT was the way to go for reliability. I have still not ordered it but will soon and I figure spending more for a good one is less than buying 2.

I have been using DT Systems for close to 20 years now and dont have one single complaint. What I like most is, they are in Dallas, so if I need something, (battery, antenna, etc.) I just go there & get it. Great company & very tough collars. 2cents

I use dogtra and they work great. I would be comfortable using any of the other three though.

One thought on the camo though. If you drop or set it down its going to be a lot harder to find. I know that seems silly but not as silly as having a collar on your dog with no transmitter. I know from expierence.

I would go with Tritronics if you can afford them. I have been using them for years with no problems. I am not sure where you are from but I know the folks pretty well they will be at the Texas Trophy Hunters Show in Ft. Worth exhibiting and selling. You should be able to get a better deal there.
Good luck and Adios,
Gary

Kayle,

I tried to find it but there is somewhere on line you can buy a reconditioned Tritronics collar. I thought it was their website but I couldn't find it on there. That might be a good deal but I have a Sport Combo G3 but the Sport Basic would work...I have a fairly soft female and I wanted the extra level settings for her.

Good luck bud...

Ive never bought one from them personally, but i hear they're pretty good.

Also, if you're wanting to get a good collar for a low price check out the tri tronics sport junior G3. Its 170 from collar clinic.

Thanks Ern3st...that is exactly the site I was trying to find.

Yeah, Tritronics is one company I wouldn't hesitate to buy a reconditioned collar from. I had already bought mine or I would've ordered from them to begin with.

No problem Kayle, that is the beauty of the forum!

Don't think I have ever seen anyone complain about a Tritronics purchase.

Try the Collar Clinic. They work on e-collars and have used ones from time to time.
Adios,

Cabela's sells refurbished tritronics collars... I saved around $60 on my classic 70 when I bought it last year and it came with the same warranty as a new one.

I started out with a sportdog 400 and it did ok, but it seemed to be real fussy about being joined up with the transmitter, and a pain in the tail when it would go out. of course it only happened when you REALLY needed it (cur pup baying a cow). I bought a tritronics and could kick myself for ever buying anything else. for the price of the sportdog i could have had another couple tritronics collars.

I just ordered the tt Sport Jr g3 from the collar clinic. I don't like the color of the transmitter, but I think I can do some redneck engineering to make a camo case for it outta camo duck tape grin I figured I'd be better off with tri-tronics in the long run.

I wouldn't camo it unless you want to make it harder to find in the gearbag or on the ground if you accidently drop out in the field.

Good choice. TT makes a good collar, you can get the lower end ones for a good price and that's all the average hunter need's. The thing to think about if you are considering a 400 yard range collar is what you hunt. If you have an upland dog that hunt's open land, that would be great. If you have a duck dog and hunt flooded timber, with all the overhead cover what used to be a 400 yard range get's reduced drastically.

Something else to think about is momentary only, continuous only, or both. IMO no need to pay more money, or buy the one with both, because if the collar has continuous you can do both. If it has momentary only you can't give continuous.

I like the Sport Dog collar. I think Charlie's is the 800 or something like that. I got sold when I went to Cabelas and the Sport Dog Rep was there.
