We had our first meeting/training early yesterday morning. The dogs did really great and the members established some goals for the club. We would love to have more people join and possibly about 10 to more different fields to train in. We talked about a monthly rotation of the fields.

If you would like to join, it is free and we promise a great time for you and your best friend.

Elhew

Next training session goal:
1.Backing with the backing dog and transition to actual bird dog pointing.
2.More exposure for young dogs to the field and birds.

Members please add to this list as to what you would also like to work on.
Have a great week.

Sounds great. I have a neat, simple way to introduce your dog to steady wing and shot and will show you how at my casa. I use the whoa post.

I also had a great time last Saturday. I enjoyed meeting Daniel and watching his dog Jager work, he is a great looking dog. I'd just like to work on exposure to the field and the whole process for Tucker, I may bring out Abby as well. Can't wait to train again!
Also any of you guys that would like to join us it is a great time, we work each dog individually and we quit before it gets hot. If anybody else has a field they would like to train in let us know. We are open to going to Mesquite or something like that. Hope to see you all out there.

For sure.

We are finally catching some birds too. If possible, lets try for one evening this week or Sat morning. Let me know. I sure had fun the last time and now that I am going through force fetch with my older pointer, we could both use some fun.

We train until it gets above 85 degrees. The plants are not terribly long and we have ponds around the area for the dogs to swim in. I am so afraid of the heat, but the cloud coverage has been nice the past couple of days.

I have tried twice this week, really early in the morning, to train a string of dogs at various levels. This morning was the worst. We started at 6:30 and it was already hot and extremely humid. We used quail and all of the dogs had a difficult time scenting due to the heat and zero wind. I have made the choice to postpone training until we have a cool spell hit. So watch the weather and if we can get a morning where it is in the low 70's, than lets train. I felt really bad for the dogs and my buddy and I were literally sweating out gallons of water. No fun.

I am just going to focus on solid whoa work from my young pointer and continue Force Fetch with my older one until it cools down some and provide real short plants for them using pigeons. We are still trapping birds and should have some for sale this weekend if anyone needs some. It just takes to long to work so many dogs and beat the heat at the same time. Let me know if I can help anyone out or answer any questions.
FYI:
One of our creative members is designing shirts for our club and they sound really awesome. Let us know if you would be interested in one.

I'll try to make it out with you guys. I've worked out a deal with my job to train early in the mornings on Tues/Thurs and like he said above, it's so humid it's miserable for me, but the dogs don't seem to mind. I need to go catch some wild pigeons - anyone want to help me tonight? It will be on the West side of Fort Worth and after 10PM.

We meet at our training fields and there we discuss our plans for training, ect. We do not have dues or anything like that. Our big plan is to rotate areas to train in so that our dogs have diverse training sessions with varying terrain. We have several places to go that include areas to shoot over our dogs to areas that we can only use starter pistols. Our members are pretty much spread out over the dallas area and we would love more members.
We currently have about 6 members who all own pointing dogs. Our goal is to just have fun with our dogs in the field, equip them for hunting/field trialing, and meet other hunting dog folks who love the sport as much as we do. It has been really hot lately, but as soon as we can get a nice cool morning we will start up. We use the forum as a means to communicate about training sessions, ect. Please pm me and I can give you more detail.

Is this exclusive to pointing dogs, or is there a possibility of it including flushers at some point?

cockerfan, If you go to the website and read our vision statement (it's under the club/club events section), you'll get a better picture of what we are all about. But to answer your question, yes it includes flushers and ALL gun dog breeds. I look forward to seeing you on there!

I would be interested in coming out to a training day. I just moved to Plano and am trying to figure out the rules to hunting in Texas.

I signed up for the site but am awaiting permission to post.

Here are a few pics of my French Britt Arrow

We are looking forward to our first official club training day. Our club is determined to focus on the needs of the members, so we would like to know what you need to work on.

We can start at the beginning on the basics of Here, Intro to birds and guns, collar conditioning (if your dog is ready), or more advanced work in backing, whoa, steady to wing and shot, ect. Depending on what you need help with and numbers we might have several trainers on site to assist in groups.

We are very thankful to Texas Hunting Forum because this site is how our club got started and the opportunities to build lasting friendships around dogs and training will be unlimited!!

We look forward to hearing from you. PM me if you would like more info.
Elhew

I guess I should have checked the website out before asking. This looks like an awesome opportunity. I should be in TX by mid Sep at the latest, and I will definitely participate in this once I get there.

Just joined up on your website. I look forward to getting together with our dogs. Here is Grace, my 1/2 brit 1/2 gsp. She is 8 months old in these pics except for the one with the quail in her mouth. She is ten weeks old there.
