Just started shooting a 9mm handgun several weeks ago. Range provided 30x24 paper target with 5 bullseyes. Getting a little tired of shooting at the same targets week after week. Thinking of getting some Visicolor targets to change things up a little. BTW I'm shooting 3, 7 and 15 yards until I start hitting some bullseyes consistently. Shot paper plates last week, and shot at human sillohuettes the week before. What targets do you proficient shooters like to use for practice and to keep yourself interested? Human Heads....Just kiddin. I like to shoot stuff that explodes like fruit, cheap coke cans, and rotten eggs. But I doubt you could shoot these types of things at a public range.

Thinking of plinking at some clay skeet targets,.pdf printouts of bottles (not real glass), playing cards, plastic milk jugs filled with water, and balloons.

I use paper plates with colored "garage sale dots"
When I'm sighted in I write what ammo I'm zeroed in with on a sticker and stick it on the stock.
At the lease shoot rifles long range we use bottles full of water.

When on a range that allows it my favorite is golf balls. Reactive targets tht can take a pretty good beating, not recomended as target for 50BMG comes appart too fast and in such small pieces you do not see any reaction other than it is no longer there We even have races, 3 shooters, 3 golf balls at 15 yards, winner gets their golf ball to the 50 yard target first.

Gotta try the golfball race described above. Sounds like fun and good practice at a tiny target too! I'm gonna look for some in bright orange and bright yellow.

Turtles with 22's. If you know of a source where I can buy some more to stock a relatives lake I need some. We killed all of them. Either that or the survivors noticed relatives getting popped and bugged out while they had the chance.

Think twice about shooting golf balls. Hunting buddy told me about a man that died doing it. The bullet bounced back and got him. Don't know if it is true or not, but something to think about.
I carry a gun because I'm too young to die, and too old to take a whoopin!

Googled "Golf Ball Shoot" and found this description of a match at an indoor gun range in Orgeon:
All targets are shot at 50 feet, in two phases. Each phase uses 50 rounds of .22 rimfire ammunition shot at targets consisting of ten (10) golf balls and four (4) tennis balls hung from wire hangers and paper targets. Shooters start with the golf balls. Once all the golf balls have been dispatched, they move to the tennis balls. Ten points are scored for each golf and tennis ball hit. After hitting each golf ball and tennis ball once, they move to two paper targets. The paper targets are scored based on the number of hits in the scoring area. Needless to say, the shooter who gets through the golf and tennis balls expending the fewest rounds has a potential advantage.
Phase I: Participants are given 8 minutes to fire 50 rounds at the targets in the order given above. This lengthy time period allows everyone to relax and work on his or her skills.
Phase II: We call this the “Speed Round.” Participants use the same targets, shot in the same order, with the same amount of ammunition as phase I. The only thing that changes is the timing. The first 6 rounds are fired in 22 seconds, the next 6 rounds in 20 seconds and the third set of 6 rounds in 18 seconds. This pattern continues for a total of eight timings, each decreasing by 2 seconds until the final 8 rounds are shot in 8 seconds.

Seriously though... I have my own land, so a range isn't an issue. I shoot a .380 pistol, 38 spl snubnose revolver and 9 mm. I practice at 20', 30', 50' and to make things interesting, about 65' with some brush, etc. partially covering the target. I also switch up the terrain - down hill, up hill, across a ditch... and my shooting position - crouched, kneeling, behind a tree, etc. I shoot different times of day in different lighting - bright sun with strong shadows, dusk, blustery weather. All this makes for a more challenging shoot and improves my focus. Keeps things interesting enough, regardless of the target. On a good day I might luck up and a snake will happen by...

When I was shooting pistol all the time, I used 3"x5" index cards.
I'd make about a 1" square in the middle with a felt pen, and staple a bunch of them to the target board at the range.
When I could keep all 10 in the card, I felt I was doing good, and would move back to the next position.
They're really cheap, and easy to carry in your range bag.

From my experience using golfballs a 22lr will penetrate into th golfball and remain inside sometimes havign a lump on the other side. Centered one with a 38-55 at abotu 40 yards one day and that bullet was inside the golfball. If the ball is free to roll I do not believe a bullet will bounce off adn come back. One I did put om a target backstop and shot with a 50BMG did come completely apart and there was about a 4 inch circle of white plastic impregnated in the blackboard target board. Guess a 50BMG is a little over kill for a golfball.

Update ---shot at the golf balls laying on the ground down range this past weekend. Some of the bullets went all the way through and some stayed inside the golf ball (when I hit one!) I started at 7 yards and had to quit at 20 yards cause I couldn't hit 'em beyond that range with open iron sights. Easy to see misses puffing dirt in the air around the missed target and when hit, the ball would scoot away 5-10 yards. Only problem was finding the golf ball in tall grass--gotta keep it on dirt! This seemed a fairly safe target with little worry about richochette, due to the soft, pliable exterior of the golf ball, and shooting toward the ground. Next time I'm gonna shoot at them on golf tees to see how far I can "drive" 'em down range with one shot. Forgot to mention I was shooting a Sig Mosquito (.22 pistol) at the golf balls.

Yup a range like we use that has very little grass is a plus for this type of shooting. We have talked about using tees but never have remembered to take them out with us. Furtherest I have driven one and found it was off teh ground using a 17 remington with a 20gr bullet at about 4400fps, blew a chunk out of the ball and it went about 70 yards.

I just got some plastic clips from Sure Site. With the clips you can hang clay skeet targets from a rope.
