I would say a .223 would serve you much better.

Neither...bump up to a .243 Recoil still won't be an issue and it will give you a little better power, range, and versatility. Not opening the can of worms that a .223 is a poor choice for deer, as everyone knows many deer and hogs lay dead to a well placed shot from one; however, a .243 would probably be a more efficent and wise choice. Unless you are talking about a scoped, fully rifled slug gun shooting top of the line sabots, a 20 gauge slug gun is not the best choice beyond 50 yards either.

Like I have said before , I can put a .177 pellet in the eye of any animal out to 500yrds or wait it may have been 1000yrds.
If I was shot with a 62grn 223, I would for sure catch the projectile in my mouth and hand it back to you !! This sir, is a fact...

For an all around gun that would suit you well in Texas, bolt action .270 with a 3-9x40mm scope.
If your trying to make the choice between a 20ga and a .223 that you already own or have access to; then I would say The .223 with some good lead tip ammo. Because accuracy is more important than stopping power, since most slugs are not very accurate at 100yds.
Seeing as your name is Teenhunter I will give you this advice, save your money and make a good purchase when YOUR ready to.
One summer in middle school I mowed 60 yards(front and back) to be able to afford a Ruger 77mkII stainless in .270win and put a Leupold Vari-XIII 3.5-10x40 scope on it. At the time it actually was painfull to fork over all that hard earned cash; but that was the rifle I shot my first deer with and I still have it to this day and its just as good as the day it came out of the box.
Figure out what you want and work toward it, you will learn a lot about your self and buying a good rifle is an investment. After all if you take care of it then the rifle will out live you.

223 is a good choice..easy to find ammo and very capable
20 slug with a rifled barrel and the new technology of slugs out there is also very capable at 100 yards... but recoil is going to be something to think about if you have problems with heavy recoil.
If you already have either, just use what you got...assuming you have a rifled 20ga barrel... if you have a 223 and would have to buy the 20 ga barrel just go with the 223 or vs versa.. Hope that makes sense.

Mowing yards was tough back then. Not easy like you young uns have it now. We had to use a dull knife and cut grass one blade at a time. I remember the time when ...... uh, well, I forgot what you were talking about now, but you get my point

lol I didn't open the can completely, just broke the seal! No, like I said a .223 works, no doubt about it, but for not much more recoil it is indisputable there are better options. As someone else said, a .270 would be even a better choice than the .243 which I suggested; however, in the real world of shooting shot placement makes the kill over cartridge power more often than not. Yes, this information is probably preaching to the choir, but for any new shooters and hunters reading it is valuable information to balance power with the amount of recoil you can take before shot placement and accuracy is hindered. It does,'t make anyone more of a man to use a .300 Remington Ultra Mag on a TX whitetail, nor does it make one a wimp to chose a .243win. Use what works for you best that will within reason humanely take the game you pursue. As I am writing this, I am facebooking a friend who is considering buying a .338 Win Mag to use on an upcoming black bear hunt solely because he read in a popular hunting magazine that in the opinion of the author this caliber is the best choice for black bear. He was convinced his .270 was rendered virtually impotent for black bear just because it wasn't included in the list of "acceptable cartridges" for the game. In his defense, he is very new to the sport of hunting and thus, as we all were at some point in time, is easily swayed by the words of these "experts" in magazines and such. So to all less seasoned shooters that read these blogs, take them with a grain of salt and do not sell your .223 that you can routinely drive tacks with to buy a costly magnum based on the advise and opinions of others, as you will do yourself a huge injustice.
