My wife is wanting to get into hunting. I would like to get her a nice youth size shotgun. She is a light weight at 98 pounds and 5'2". I am thinking of getting her a semi-auto to reduce the recoil.

Just trying to get your thoughts on this. I found a 1187 in youth, senthetic stock for 659.00 @ BassPro.

Thoughts?

I am really up in the air on this. Pump or Semi-auto... Brand, etc....

Thanks,

JL

I bought my wife a Mossberg 500 20 gauge in a youth model. She loves it and is deadly with it. She can bust clays all day and smoke a few pheasants too. If I remember right, it was under $300

I'm 5 ' 8 and weigh 114 pounds. I really like my Mossberg M935. It's semi-auto in .12ga. Recoil is nominal.

I would first take her out and shoot a 12ga (either yours or a friend's) and see if she can handle it. I have found that NOT telling her that a 12 is a larger caliber shell and their is the option of a 20 is a good idea. Taht way she will have no preconcieved notions about it being "too much" for her. If it's still too much, then tell her about a 20ga.

But i agree with your initial thought, a semi is probably the way to go.

Thanks yall. She will mainly be hunting doves, but plans on making a Turkey trip next year too.

We are gonna go check out a few gun shops around town this weekend.

Beretta 391 20 ga. buy a good one, and be done with it. and if she hates it and never goes again, you've got a nice 20 to add to your collection.

my ex gf shot a Beretta 391 in a 12 pretty consistently, and she was tiny. they don't have much perceived recoil

My thoughts exactly and there is a 20ga 391 in the classifieds right now.

Good luck but I would stick with the gas guns if recoil is a concern.

Benelli has the lightest recoil of all guns if that is what you're after.

Here's the link to the Beretta 20g AL391 Urika 2 in the classifieds. Has a lot of extras that are included with it:

The Remington 1100 LT-20 would be great or a Beretta 390.

Inertia operated guns such as the Benelli have a sharper recoil impulse than gas guns do.
