I am thinking about buying the 750# feeder. I really like the fact that you can just pour straight into the hopper and dont have to climb up and down a ladder.

Anyone ever used them? Opinions welcome.

Thanks

They look identical to the ones Big Horn Metals make.

The biggest problem you will have with that will be condensation (slight) inside or the feed spouts clogging from a heavy rain. Outside of that the Big Horn ones are serviceable.

Same basic design as the Big Horn Low Profile series. BH makes both 750 and 900 lb LP protein feeders that can be filled easily from the back of the pickup. I have one of each. The 900 is a little cheaper but also weighs more. Unloading the 900 off the pickup was a bit tricky for two people. The 750 was no problem. Twenty years younger and I would go for the 900. The price of getting older :-)

I agree with Deerfeeder. Had a hard, driving three inch rain and the first inch or two of feed in the spout began to mold. Something to watch for.

Thanks a lot guys!

The main reason i like this design is becuase the protein feeders will be in feeder pens w/o gates. So i will not be able to back a truck or atv up and fill the feeder. I hate trying to throw multiple 50# bags up the ladder and fill a feeder when it is 95 degrees outside too!

About the rain getting into the spout. Are there other designs that help prevent this that yall might recommend? I am just trying to cover all my bases before i buy or build these things.

I have one of the big horn metals 900lb model (same design) the moisture problems deerfeeder mentioned is very true.

It's a good quality feeder, but you do get some feed loss/tube blockage.

I haven't had those issues with the boss bucks and they are all I use for protein now. Not as "easy" to fill up but you don't have the moisture issues that you have with metal feeders. The tubes also don't get blown in moisture as much as square tubes.

The Bossbuck line does not have those problems. Full disclosure: I sell them, but I sell them because they are so water resistant.

I've had bossbuck feeders out and we've had pretty much horizontal, wind driven rain, and the only protein that got wet was what was in the feed spout facing the rain. And then, what happens is that the build up is no more than the height of the lip (about 1/8-1/4", I've never measured it) and extends back possibly two inches max! You don't get the solid clumps as shown above (and there are other feeders on the market that do the same thing) the spoilage, or the blockage. It continues to feed.

Check them out: www.bossbuck.com. They have a list of dealers on the web page, you can buy direct or from any of them that may be close to you.

We bought the all season tube feeders. We looked at those also, but didn't buy it because of the moisture problem. So far so good for clogging. But loading it we have to use a ladder, or front end loader on the tractor.

The new line of All Seasons feeders is a big step forward, compared to the old style, but the ones I've seen still have a problem with moisture working its way in around the sight glass, but it's manageable.

I have a HB 750 protein feeder and never had it clog... I liked it because it was built much better than bighorn but thats just my opinion. the HB feeder allows air to flow through the tube and out the lid. the lid is latched down but is built so that the feeded can breath when the wind blows. it also helps keep the feed dry. dont get me wrong some of the feed gets wet but not enough to clog the tube. it has always continued to flow out feed. i also like how the tubes are welded to the bottom of the feeder instead of the sides like big horn. i am a very large guy and i can stand on the tubes and dont have to worry about the tubes breaking off.
