I've been offered a taurus 1911 in trade for a bass boat that I've got, what do y'all think about them? I know alot of the low end taurus guns should pretty much be avoided, just wondering if y'all have any opinions.

They are pretty decent only problem I've heard of is the ambi. safety has a problem about falling out, not a problem if you make sure its always pushed in.

So it has an actual safety, not just the grip safety?

Yea all 1911's do after the gun is racked into battery the hammer is back and there is a thumb safety that can be flipped up. You can see it in the pic just in front of the grip safety. [img:center] [/img]

I'm kinda looking at Remington's new 1911...can't wait to actually get to handle one. Saw the new Remington recently, not bad looking but the Springfield GI looks better and was a little lower in price. If I were getting a 1911 I would buy a better quality brand than Taurus. Reviews say it's a good gun for the money but I would put my cash towards a better quality one.

Because I have Shot Colts, Springfields, Kimbers, STI's and a few Clarks and Honestly yeah you can get a better gun but your going to be spending 2-3 times as much to do it.

See, I'm not putting any money towards it, I'm moving, and need to get out from under a bass boat project. I'd prefer to get cash, but a gun is alot easier to move. Would it be a waste? Only 24 rounds down the tube.

I've owned a Taurus.
Except for their .22 rifles, I won't own one again.

If the value of the gun is equal to what you want for your boat then sure, it's a worth it. Guns are easy to move for cash. Blue Book value for a standard PT-1911 in 95% condition is $450 and $525 in 98% condition. MSR is $757.
So take that in to account in your trade and you should be fine. I'm sure someone on here would love to buy it from you.
I personally will never own another Taurus. I owned a Millenium 9mm and it was a pos. I have also fired and disassembled their copy of the Beretta 92 and you could see the differences in the quality of the machining. A lot of people love Taurus and find them to be a good value but I personally will not buy another one and will not buy "cheap" guns. Just a personal opinion and not an insult to the Taurus lovers out there.
So back to the point. If the blue book value is worth what you want for your boat then it sounds like a good trade to me.

To put the Cheap thing in perspective, as a person who makes there living in the firearms market yes, 95% of what Taurus puts out is crap, This is the exception not the rule. If it makes you feel any better I primarily own Sig's but I feel comfertable when I'm able to of course carry the PT1911.

That's my main worry, is that Taurus makes a lot of crap. I was hoping to get a little more out of the boat, but I'm moving, and it's alot easier to bring a gun with me than a boat.
I love the 1911 frame, as long as they didn't screw it up too bad, I think I'll be happy with it.

It's the stainless model if that has any bearing.

I've got a couple of buddies that have tarus 1911's (one stainless and the other blued). The fit and finish seems to be pretty good, and the few times I have shot them they fired flawlessly. Only thing is that they have not put enough rounds through them to really know if they are going to last.

Thanks for the help guys, I went ahead and traded for it today. Still haven't decided what I'm gonna do with it. My heart says keep it, but my wallet says turn it into cash. Is $600 a decent number?

Not when you can buy a new one for that price... Taurus came into this world wanting to be a comapany that puts out a product for a low price. Well the resale value is going to reflect that choice. They got exactly what they wanted.
BTW, I think the PT1911's are decent little guns for the money.

It is a fine gun, but as previously stated, that's what they run new. Try completed auctions on Gunbroker for used ones, not new ones. If memory serves, $475-$525 seems to be about the going rate...
