If you own land you might talk to ASC agent or Dept of Ag. There maybe a guberment program that would help pay for portion of improvement? It take some digging to find the programs but they are there- Fed and State. James

thanks for the article, thats interesting to build. i was hoping they mentioned the brand "water guzzler" but it looks like they built their own. nonethless it sounds as if they added a valuable resource to the areas. i just wonder how long they really stay full of water, they hold 750 gallons and are suppose to be self filling.

weve been looking at these. wildlifewaterguzzler.com the 750 gallon models are 1500 bucks each. they seem real functional but i still havent talked to an owner of one or someone that has first hand knowledge. they seem like an "instant water" solution. what do you think?

I use water guzzlers from wildlifewaterguzzler.com and have found them valuable.

When I put them out last summer, I just set them on top of the ground but plan on burying them this week.

Check these out:

I saw the waterguzzlers at the hunters extravaganza in Ft. Worth several years ago. They were to pricey for me, so I built a guzzler. I used a 10' fiberglass satelite dish as the water catcher, with a pipe running to a 150 gallon storage tank, and 1/4" tubing running to a small water trough buried at ground level. I filled the storage tank in August 2003, and it never went dry until this past July after we had been in extreme drought for over 6 months. So I would think that a 750 gallon reservoir would keep it going much longer in drought conditions. I see deer and other wildlife using this water source regularly.

I use gutters on my barn that drain into an 8' circular water trough I bought at Tractor supply. Holds about 740 gallons. I'm curious how the guzzlers in the pictures above collect unless, there are small holes around the edges of the dome for the water to enter the tank. Evaporation is a real problem in my area.

I also have a rain water collection system that uses gutters on the house and 3 2500 gallon cisterns. Works amazingly well.

The inverted satelite dish as a collector is an interesting idea. You could put in on a small tower and use it to fill a 2500 gallon tank then use a float on a water trough to regulate the water to the animals. I use the black poly tanks to eliminate the algae problem. Got mine at Texas Drinking water systems in Joshua. http://www.texwater.com/water/default.asp?T=506431&DID=1328

I'd be concerned about burying them if there are any livestock on the place. They'll step through the fiberglass. If there is no advatage to burying them then I'd leave em.
