I am going to sell my .300 Win Mag and purchase a bolt action .308.
I want a 500 yard rifle and scope combination and am interested in recommendations.
Thanks

For hunting or target shooting? Pricepoint?
I could recommend a few guns, but if your using them for hunting then they probably would not be prcatical due to weight.

Scope, zeiss.... you pick the magnification you want. I'd go with 10x.
Rifle... if all you want is MOA at 500 yards, any good .308 will do you with the right load.
The real question is, what's your budget?
If I were buying any gun I wanted under 2k i'd get a remington 700 xrc and put it in an AICS stock. That there is a precision 800 yard setup right there....
You could also do just as well with a precision AR setup.

Well if you have a budget that's medium I'd say hands down a Savage.
To all you 700 guys that are gonna spout off with the "what action does every precision gun use" blah blah blah there's no arguing stock vs. stock a Savage is more accurate. The bullet doesn't know any better once it's locked in place.
I'll give a you a dark horse suggestion that's really gonna make the gun snobs cringe.....Marlin XL7 or XS7. They're only about $330 bucks and are proven submoa rifles out of the box.
Remington uses the cheapest manufacturing process for barrels while Marlin uses button forging which produces a better product.
Top it off with a VX3 and you're done.

I don't have money to burn, but will invest up to 2K to get the right rifle/scope combination. I want the best choice for the best price.
I have several Remington 700's , as my .300 Win Mag is, and it has been a great rifle,so am probably leaning that direction, but want to be sure what I am looking for before I start shopping.
I have never owned a Savage brand rifle, and was not aware that they were considered a very accurate weapon.
Thanks for all the input.

Savages are in general, very, very accurate
I really like my LTR with a jewell trigger and 3-10x50 Kahles scope 5 shots that can be covered with a dime at 100 yards with hunting bullets..

Wow, $2k is a very nice budget for a rifle and scope set up.
I assume this is for a hunting set up. My personal choice at that budget would be... For the scope I would go for a higher end Leupold, VX-3 or better, at whatever magnification you want. I have a VX-3 4.5-14x40 and think it's the greatest scope on earth. My buddy wants to trade me his Ziess Conquest 4.5-14x44 for my Leupold. I'll admit his is slightly more clear, but the thing I've always like about Leupolds is quick sight picture. For some reason Leupolds are the easiest for me to quickly see the whole sight without any black shades or rings. Although I have determined that may partially becuase I wear glasses all the time. Others don't seem to have as big of an issue with this.
As for the rifle, I think I would go for a nice walnut stock Browning X-bolt. I like their triggers alot and think some of their wood is absolutely gorgeous.

Rem 700 5r milspec w/ scope of your choice...someday I will own one of those rifles. There was one on the swap and sell that was less than a grand that I have been fighting not to get but I am trying to save for a duck boat and don't really need the gun.
My 2nd choice would be Brandon's gun.
Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

Good to know you like the VX-3; I just ordered the same model. The lack of critical eye relief is a bonus on the leupold's when a young shooter is involved. My son had a hard time getting a full circle with my Burris's but has no issues with Leupolds. I just sold a rem .308 700 Varmint SPS (26" bull barrel) , it shot rem corelokt 150 psp's just fine, but anything after that was a crap shoot. I tried 168's, 165's, match ammo, decent regular ammo and some reloads. My buddy measured the headspace and said it was on the far end of the SAMI specs, said he did some research and found others on the net dealing with the same thing. After 2 years of trying to make it shoot mo-betta I unloaded it to someone who was happy shooting corelokts (I had it hitting a 9" plate at 500 yards, -no big feat but fun, with corelokts, so they will work). I am now trying my luck with a Savage Varminter .308 with a 24" stainless fluted barrel. So far it looks to prefer the custom Hornady SST's, I just got a box of the superperformance 150 SSt's in and will see how they do next week. One decent route to go is to find someone unloading a known shooter and buy it. When you buy new you aren't too sure what you are going to get. I missed my chance a few years back on an old school bull barrel .308 remmy a buddy of mine was selling for $700. I said, ah heck I can buy a new one for that, my mistake. As I found out, In the world of guns, new doesn't always mean better. Keep barrel length in mind. I grew to hate the 26" barrel for what I was doing. Trying to get a goose gun out of a box blind window was a PIA.

for $5000 you'd have the last precision rifle you'd ever have to buy Until you had the urge to shoot to 1000-1500 yards and get a TRG-42 in .338 Lapua Magnum...

no joke... i'd fight chuck norris for that gun... 1st of all, the awp is the ultimate in precision rifles. A reference to all the Coutner Strike players out there. 2nd, sir you can try to fight the Chuck but we all know what the outcome would be. Nothing can defeat the Chuck. Chuck Norris does not hunt because the word hunting infers the possibilty of failure. Chuck Norris goes killing.

I would seriously look at the Tikka T3 offerings with Zeiss optics. If you want to spend a little more look at Sako.
