To the OP... my Ranch Rifle is a Rock River Arms M4 in 5.56... On our place, I would never worry about a 300 yard shot... Works great for me and is very compact.
Good luck.

The 6.8 sounds like the one I want. Readily available ammo, and good ballistics. not a bad choice! honestly i haven't picked up my .270(which i love, and don't think i've missed once yet with) since i bought my 6.8spc ar15....

How much recoil does the 6.8 have? How does it compare to a .270 150 grain bullet leaving the muzzle at 3000 fps.

it's a VERY popular round... if the popularity lasts a few more years, enough people will have them to make the round profitable.
I personally would buy one (and will if i can sell one of my other guns)

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting an AR-15 and was wondering what round to go with. I have a .270 bolt action, so I was looking for a semi-automatic gun to have. I heard they make an AR in a .243, And was wondering if I should go with that or the .223.
That depends on what's more important to you. Readily available ammo at an inexpensive price such as the .223 (5.56mm) make sure the rifle is labeled for both by the way. Or do you want a ballistically superior cartrige? Such as the .243 or 6.8mm. I purchased my AR chambered in .223 a couple of years ago and if I had it to do over again I would've done more research on the .243 vs. the 6.8mm and not purchased the inferior .223 On the other hand I bought the rifle from a friend at a good deal which is to say the other two chamberings I mentioned would've cost significantly more to buy the rifle. As well as getting stocked up on ammo and reloading equipment for those cartriges. So you have to factor those type of things into YOUR situation. What is so inferior about the 223? In no way is it inferior it is simply a different cartridge. What do yo mean it is a different cartrige? It's been in military service since the Viet Nam war. The .223 has it's applications, but I don't think deer hunting is one of them. Read the history of the M 16 coupled with the .223 and find out how many service men died because of the light round and the unreliable M 16. And how many service men wanted their M 14 (.308 by the way) back in their hands. Of course the M 16 has had those reliability problems corrected since; however the .223 is virtually the same round. It has only had the type of powder changed from the days of its origin in the M 16. Not inferior you say? Take your pick of a website that will give you ft/ lbs. of energy and compare the little .223 to the others in question, 6.8mm, .243, or the tried and true .308 Winchester, which by the way is arguably the best all around short action cartrige ever created.

6.8 has in an AR has less recoil than a 243 a 6.8 AR with an adjustable stock is about the perfect Texas "family" hunting rifle
meaning I have number of rifles suited to hunting, bolt action 243, 270, 308, etc.. but in all reality, the 6.8 with an adjustable stock is all "we" really need to be able to hunt anything and anywhere in Texas.
Potent, accurate, low recall, easy for a kid to shoot, etc..
