A lot of folks say their sight gets better with age. In my experience it's the young ones that spot you before the older ones... but hogs mostly move under moonlight. When it's black out they'll still get out and about, but not to the extent as they would when there's a good full moon.

^^^ agree with Ran I have seen the little ones get spooked when you stalk up on them where as the big ones are just like I can kill you stay back. But my theory on them moving at night is that since they have bad eye sight then everything else will too in the dark but heck if I no.

Don't be fooled. They see a lot better than what people give'm credit for.
As far as moving in the dark, I've NEVER had any luck on a full moon. But on a new moon, I can stack them up like cord wood!!

I've always had better luck when there's more moon... different kinda hogs I guess. As long as they die and taste good it don't matter though!

It's said that hogs' vision is on par with ours. My experience has been that they may not seem to see you when you're so close it you'd think it was obvious, but if you're STILL they just don't notice. Like all animals though, they will key in on movement. One of the coolest things is to be stalking down a trail and meet a pig halfway. Their head kinda pops up and they kinda grunt like 'UH?' and then haul beans!

No joking about being still. My retarded brother decided he wanted to kill a hog with a spear. He gets into the thick of about 60 hogs, took him 45 minutes just to get into 'em. Once he was that close he spent another 30 minutes just trying to get into position with all these hogs down in an open bottom. When he threw the spear the pig he picked took a step and watched the spear go by. If you manage your sent you can darn near pet the suckers if you're patient enough.

A Friend and me stalked the pig in my sig in a wide opens field nothing between us and him. We prob walked 200 yds, only reason we stopped and shot is cause the cows that were out there stopped and were staring at us like cows do and he started reacting to them. No doubt we could have closed it to 100 yrds easy. I have always been told they have poor eye sight but they can hear and smell very well.

Hogs have better eye sight than people give them credit for. I have been busted many, many times over the years, that distance you described. There are other factors that may play into not running when you're coming including him feeling that you weren't a threat or it could just be HIS eye sight sucked (I'm saying HE cuz you don't mention any other hogs which would tell me he was likely a mature boar - juveniles still like to hang with the sounders. There eyesight is not nearly as good as deer or other animals in the woods but we fool ourselves into thinking they can't see worth a crap. Stalking while they're feeding is easier, obviously because they're hungry and don't care about you or they are simply distracted. There is also an area most people don't talk much about, that the hogs are desensitized to your presence. Hogs that feed often in ditches on the side of the road, aren't necessarily bothered by traffic screaming by at 70 miles per hour. Hearing is relative to what may be occuring - canals clean - hear, canals clogged with crap and bugs, ticks, etc - hear less. Hogs have the best noses in the woods IMHO and are incredibly intelligent!

If you have a sighted person and a blind person in total darkness, who has the advantage?

I think they do have poor eye sight but GREAT sense of smell and hearing. I think they rely more on those two wheither it's night or day.

Neither!!! They both will bump around in the dark.
I've chased these boggers for years now. In my experience, and my opinion only, they can smell much better than a deer, they can see fairly well, but I don't think their hearing is that good. Due to the fact that I've drove up and I mean right up on them in the truck and 4 wheeler.
I think where the "poor eyesight" comes into play, if you can catch them feeding and rootin, yes, you can walk right up on them. They all have their heads in the dirt!!! But if there is just one that isn't, they will bust and run.

One reason hogs feed at night it’s because it’s cooler. Hogs do not have sweat glands and it’s more comfortable for them. They do have a keen sense of smell, and poor eyesight. I only bow hunt and I have countless times closed the distance to under 30 yards, by using trees to shield me and moving slowly.

well...that's true, but in winter, with snow, they feed at night as well. my experience is they hear very well, smeel much more than deer ou dogs but don't see very much. if you stand still, you can be stand in the middle of nowhere, if the wind is good for you, they don't see you. if you move, that's another story.
here they usually walk everynight, with or without moon, and they are much more active outside the bush without moon. i think they use the smell and the knowledge os their environment to walk with no light at all.
