I think Pentax and Nikon are the best deals on the market in terms of optic quality vs. money. That said, I've got a Meopta 4x16 that's terrific.

My best scope is a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 with B&C reticle. I love leupolds and think it's hard to get any better than others with similar power and features, including my buddy's Zeiss. And is around your price range.

With that said, my brother's Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 is not far behind. For $300 I think it's a better value than my leupold. Also seems to hold zero completely fine on a 7 mag.

Just went through this on another post and the Monarch for about $500 was it..BUT I just saw that swfa has a 4-12x50 Meopta Meostar with a #4 reticle (can't get with a Monarch) for $499. Would be my first choice - but it would depend on what you want it for.

Leupold VX-III. If you don't want to spend that much, the Nikon Pro Staff series is great.
