Never entered the drawings but how do they work. How much $ does it cost before during and after the hunt. I know Texas has drawings and was thinking of throwing my name in when it comes about.

The Kansas draw they are talking about is not a controlled hunt draw like we have in texas. It is a license or permit draw like Colorado or New Mexico. Your applying for a license to hunt Deer in in an area of the State for the duration of the season you are applying for. Kansas is not like Texas where you just buy a license and hunt any deer season you want where you want. When you submit an application, you send Kansas dept of parks and wildlife $322.50 and a preference of Hunt Units in an application. If drawn you get a permit in the mail and you are also then required to purchase a general hunting license for $72.50. If you do not draw a permit, you are refunded $301. They keep the difference for a preference point fee and you accumulate one preference point for next time. Cost during is up to you and can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. Depends on where you stay, if your hunting public on your own, paying for private access, etc. Texas controlled hunts are an entirely different thing. Texas drawn hunts your applying for a managed hunt that only lasts three or four days. Kansas has an equivalent to that called Kansas Special Hunts that you can apply for, but you would have to have a permit already for the Unit a respective special hunt is located in to be able to hunt one of those if drawn. Most Kansas Special Hunt draws are for first time hunters and youth.

The only thing I can add to the above, when you apply for a deer tag, you MUST apply for only ONE season. Either ML, Archery, or Rifle season. So, if you apply for rifle season, you can only hunt in rifle season. Unlike archery season, you can bow hunt in rifle season except you must wear hunter orange during that time.

I got my archery tag for units 11 and 12. I am really pumped about this.

I have a good friend who bought a ranch up there and this will be my first time to try Kansas Whitetail hunting. I have seen it enough on TV to know that it could be a real good time!

I saw this thread and I checked online and found out I got my tags for units 11 and 12. Has anyone actually received their tags in the mail? I printed out my out of state hunting license when I applied for my tags, but other than what I saw online, I actually don't HAVE any tags!

How does this work?

Let me guys ask you something? Will you be able to attempt to buy tags again in say June, if there are any left from the draw?

Thanks

People who didn't draw a tag will be able to buy left over tags. I don't know the exact date but I know that it is sometime in june or july. I think they will send us the tags later on. I don't think they where supposed to announce it until june 1. So we should get some information after that. Is this your first time millerlite??? My family lives in longview, you grow up there??

You will recieve your tag in the mail.
When?? I'm not sure. Last year it was in June or July when I got mine. And last year the drawing was the end of May. So I would be expecting it in the next couple of weeks.

If you put in for the draw and drew a tag, no you can't. You are allowed one tag, all seasons combined. Other words, say you drew a archery tag, you can't go and buy a rifle tag. The only tag you can get other than a either sex tag, is a doe tag and you can buy those over the counter. But the only way you can get a doe tag, is to have a either sex tag.
Now, if you missed the draw or did not draw a tag, yes you can buy a tag if there are any left over tags available.

dabuckmaster - yes, this will be my first time to bow hunt in Kansas (actually any type of hunting in Kansas). A good friend of mine's dad bought a ranch in Kansas so I am going to get the opportunity to hunt it.

Yes, I live in Longview.

Units 11 and 12 with Kim Hines at H & H outfitters. We hunted the MO side last year but got first 4 days of Rifle season in KS this year. Lessons learned upgrade from 30-06 to 7 MM Rem Mag, dress warm and stay put til DARK!!!! Can not wait for Kim to send some pictures this summer!

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for this. My FIL owns about 900 acres I can hunt on in unit 13 I believe. Would like to hunt it, just didn't have time to talk the funds over with the wife before the draw. This will give me some time to get some honey dews done and sweet'n her up a bit.

Remember, you can hunt the general firearms season too as long as you use your muzzleloader. I did this last year and killed in both seasons.
