Hey Guys,
My question is what kind of electronic Caller should I get that wont break the bank? Do I build my own or buy one? Also, Could i get good enough with a mouth call by next tuesday??? The last one maybe a long shot
I have read how to build my own and download the sound files. Also seen cassetes for sale that are really cheapI have also looked at various callers from the Phantom Pro-Series to the Foxpro Spitfire. The spit fire looks sweet but i have read that it doesnt have the range of other callers but still looks like a good deal.
Any pointers or advise would help
Craig

foxpro spitfire is best cheapest i think.. 199 plus tax at most places... can change sounds if you want. i've called in numerous animals, called in a yote around 7pm tonight

Thanks for the response, Thats what I was leaning towards. I might have to sell my 20 gauge to get enough money for it

i don't think the spitfire has near the range the other fox pro's do like you said, but honestly you really don't need to have it way out away from you... it works for all the situations i've came across... personally i like calling em in close... yote tonight was 15 yards from my dad today, and his camo suzuki samari was sitting right next to him, and it was daylight.lol i'm sure thats why the yote turned around and went the other way tho... lol

I havent had a problem with a foxpro yet so i would say go for it. Now with the mouth calls check out Randy Anderson's site here and get the mastering the art video. He goes into good detail. Or even if you have an itunes account search the predator hunting talkcast and he has one in there where he goes into howling. There no better satifaction to me than actually doing it all myself and the foxpro has not came out of the bag in a while.

Wigeon - try a mouth caller first -just for the experience. Many conflicting tactics will be orecommended. FWIW I start fairly soft. Funny thing is I have called in more doe's than anything using one as bleet. You can make your electronic caller easily. There is a site that has multiple distress calls in mp3 format available for download. I built a simple amplifier from radio shack parts to attach to a player. A 9volt transistor powered ampout put to an external speaker they also sell. Very cheap and the calls were free.

Sweet I may have to try a mouth call. My only concern with making a call is the sounds. I dont know how good the quality would be when I crank up the home made caller. I also dont have a soldering iron which makes putting any electrical stuff together a lot easier.

You don't have to solder anything with the homebrew setup unless you want to put your own switch on it, I used mine last night and it worked great!
My setup right now is just my iTouch with headphone jack going to the input of the radioshack amplifier, then a speco horn plugged into the ext speaker port of the amp. I just marked on the volume where it needs to be set on the amp to where it can go as loud as possible without being distorted...later today I'm gonna take a shot at soldering in a switch and on/off light to mount on top of the box.

Does anyone have a link that explains how to make this call in detail with pictures?

The spitfire is probably to the best for the money. I use the fury, which is great, but it costs $600.

Just bought a spitfire and a Red and amber lense. After hunting with ffread I have some idea how to set up for a night hunt, but need help on a set up for a morning hunt. What time should I go? how far away should I put the call away?
Any tips on what sounds I should be using? I was thinking cottontail distress or maybe a fawn distress due to the time of year.

my first varmint hunt was with ffread ... lol for day hunting just sneak in, sit with sun at your back if possible, check the wind, and time doesn't matter much. i've called them in all times of the day... few just after noon.... best is morning and before dark.
and i've called in most my animals with the lightning jack call on that caller. seems to work very well and is one of the louder calls on there. good luck! oh and coyote pup in distress works pretty good too
