Just got on a lease on the west side of ranger. I am new to hunting in this area so any advice would be great. I know they are a AR county which does not bother me. I have seen some pictures and there are some very nice deer on film. I am going out in two weeks to set up my feeders. Have a few concerns on that. There are cows and also hogs. Would barb wire work or is cattle panels reccommened. Any help would be great.

Should be some nice deer in that area and I would definitely want at least 3' hog panels and a couple runs of barb wire around the top.

I'd use welded wire panels if I were you.
If you string barbed wire, stretch it tight. You don't want a cow getting hung up in it.

The hunting should be decent, but be prepared to deal with a LOT of hunting pressure.

Welcome to the Ranger area. Cattle panels will be your best bet. And make your pens large enough so several deer can be in there and not feel confined or crowded

Lots of hunting pressure but that must mean we have a lot of deer here...... Panels. Panels. Panels - and spend some time on your pens. Whatever you think is strong enough, then build it a lot stronger (especially if you have hogs AND cattle.

the top one is the carbon county buck shot a few years ago
bottom is my buck from eastland county just north of town in morton valley area
We had deer hitting feeders hard preseason, then rain came, and acorns, and deer just flat out vanished!! I lucked out and this was the only shooter i saw. Very good genetics in the area though.

I would say that 130-140" is definately a shooter. We have owned property there since 1989 and it was low fenced for the first 6 or so years. During those years is was a one buck county and you were lucky to see a 4.5 year or older buck. Things will change with the introduction of AR's. I always saw a ton of 1.5 to 2.5 year olds at the processor every year.

Keep in mind that we have been fenced for about 14 years but this is what can be produced with a little age and nutrition

Buck I killed this past year(grossed 169 5/8")

Some other bucks

Some I have killed in the past

......wait. Did you say Eastland County? We don't have any deer here and we're an AR county. This would be a serious wast of time. Those pictures of big 'uns must be from a big 15' high fence.

These are a perfect example of what to expect from a nice mature buck in that area. Not the others. IMO

I will be out there this weekend to get my feeder going and my camera up. Hope to see something good next time I go to check it. Only time will tell. Even if I dont get a big one. The time in the woods with the family will be well worth it.

Well I wnet out there this weekend and got my feeder pen set up. And started throwing some corn out at 6 a.m. I plan on going back out in a few weekends to check the camara and hope and pray for the best. We saw lots of coyotes, bobcays and tons of coons. Mysekl and two other lease members plan on going out there and taking care of some of them.
