First of all it is a pretty old bow, you really need to have it checked out to make sure it's safe to shoot.

Where do you live?

Yes, some of the staff will know enough to let you know some things. Don't buy arrows from there if you can get by Academy go there for arrows.

I agree, Troy is an awesome guy, he's one of my sponsors.

That was my first bow. Bear Whitetail II It was a handme down from my father. I believe it is like the 30/30 to rifle hunting as far as how far we came however those bows have killed a lot of deer.

It was my first also and very fond memories of it and killed a few deer w/ it. I really don't miss it though. I love my Martin!

I would make sure the draw length is correct for you first. No use in setting it up or checking it out if it isn't. This is the number one priority IMO. If it isn't right you'll have a raw forearm if it is too long. No fun for a beginner.

Never have Bass Pro look at your bow. They have screwed up two of my bows and I don't trust them anymore.

We had an event at Bass Pro Shops with Bowtech about three years ago, and I did meet one guy there that seeme to know what he was doing, but all the others didn't know squat. Just because you sell archery items doesn't make you an Bow specialist. I've met a lot of people working in pro shops that I didn't trust with my bows. There are too many around that I recommend except for David at David's Outdoors in Weatherford, and Troy in Alvarad is pretty sharp. Most will try to stear you into a new bow.

Ken Witt at Arlington Bow Hunting World is a jerk even though he probably is the best round. He's a Mathews man and knows his stuff, but if you bring something else in his shop he call is a POS.. I will never do business with that jerk again.

I can't say anything good or bad about Smithfield Archery on Beach, I've bought a few things from them, they are a little high, but real nice people.

I've dealt with about 8-10 different bow technicians at Bass Pro. Out of them I have only trusted 2. My best experience was at Pigeon Road in Stephenville. The technicians there are all competitive shooters and internationally ranked.

You have to understand most of those guys that work in those places we simply looking for a job when they applied. Most have worked in different departments, just like going into The Home Depot, if they knew so much about the departments they were working in they wouldn't be there. They would be in the real work making the real bucks!

I was in the same situation a couple weeks ago. I took it to smithfield archery and they were amazing! He adjusted my draw weight/ length, checked out the bow, and showed me the proper way to shoot. He then let me shoot for about 20 minutes or so. And only charged $10!! I will definitely be going back to see them. So if you're near 820 and N. Beach, I would definitely go see them. Couldn't have asked for better customer service.

Had a very similar experience. Really nice guy didn't spend much money with him but still gave 100% attention to me. He asked me where I got my bow and I told him online because it was x dollars and he said yep don't blame you one bit for picking it up. Didn't give a lick that I didn't spend that money with him. Genuine good folks over there.

One thing you need to get is some wax. If you need a new string of keep the existing string you need to always wax the string. It will keep the string from fraying. I see so many strings not wax and it dries them out. They sell wax at BPS or any bow shop. Check the peep sight and make sure it fits you right. There is different size peep sight. Your arrows, make sure they are the right length for you. Different type of releases. There are buckles and Velcro. When in the stand and you pull back the Velcro will pull and make noise and spook the game. Get some Velcro and just pull it apart. That is the sound it will make. I would stick with the buckle type. There are different weights of broad heads and field points. There are expandleable and fix broad heads. You will get different opinions on those. Don't let the speed of IBO(speed) of the arrow fool ya. Some shoot like 320ft a second and some 250ft a second. You don't need high speed to kill game. You get discouraged if you can't pull back 70lbs. Most have to work up to it and a lot will not shoot that much pull. Work and feel comfortable and be able to hold the draw weight for 30 seconds or more. Most hunting shots will not be pull and shoot. Will most likely have to pull and hold the shot before releasing. Different types of arrows, make sure you get the right ones. Those are things off the top of my head. Good luck

Thanks, Jigfish

x2 what jigfish said, and good greif don't forget to wax, that is so over looked.
Jigfish,I get a wax from my buddy John from Bucknasty, it's so soft and easy, he used to sell it like a bar of soap, not come in a push up tube. Do you know what kind of wax that is. It's freaking amazing, not like that crap they sell at Acamedy!

I shot my first few deer with a Whitetail II. That was back in the 90's and when I got a new bow I sold it to a friend. I hunted with him this past year and shot it a few times for memory's sake... I almost bought it back from him cause it made me remember a simpler time. Those things are built like tanks. If it was properly cared for, it should bring you into the sport nicely! Good Luck

Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.
