I am new to predator hunting and need some advice. I am looking to buy a new gun for this purpose and cannot decide between a .223 or 22-250. The gun will be used mostly for coyotes, coons & bobcats but it is not out of the question for a hog to wander in. Is the .223 enough? I like the .223 due to the zero recoil and the cheap ammo but want to make sure I do not make a bad purchase. Any advice is appreciated.

It's not a bad purchase but the bottom line is a 22-250 is a better caliber.
I would use the .223 for everything except deer and yotes. Even though with proper shot placement you could take either. I just wouldn't do it.

22.250 is the best choice of the 2 i own both,223 has its place but the 250 has more power and ammo is not that much highr....you should get a lot of feed back on this.....

Thanks. How does the recoil/sound compare? I want to get my young nephew/niece shooting the gun and want to make sure he/she does not become gun shy.

22-250 is loud...get a .223 WSSM. Better ballistics w/o the noise or the recoil!! Just don't shoot the balistic tips. Shoot the soft points!

22-250 gets my nod. I have shot pleanty of hogs and deer with it with great success. You can also get nosler partitions and trophy bond bear claw's factort loaded.
I have two little girls; which means if GI Joe ever got to take a vacation he should come to my house...Ahhh, Estrogen Land! Where lonely barbies abound without a single man in site.

If you look at a ballistics chart, you will fall in love with the 22-250. Don't know anything about the .223 WSSM. What is it?

the 22-250 is louder, recoil on the 22-250 is .90, the .223wssm is .95, .223 is .79 velocities- using win. 55grain ballistic silver tip.. 22-250 @ 200yds 2900fps, .223wssm @ 200yds 2780fps....if you are going to use shelf ammo, you have three choices with the .223wssm, with the 22-250- 31, .223 more than you can count.

Throw Remington 222 into your considerations. My 8 year old Grandson took a pig and a deer this year with one. He has extremely sensitive ears so I had to wad up some napkin for him (forgot the ears both times). However, I don't think the recoil or sound is too bad. He is about 96 pounds. Of course I had to get a support because most rifles are a little bit too heavy for a child to hold steady. Actually the support was a cedar post wired on between 2 trees.
Make sure the pig is shot behind the ear and the deer in the neck. They don't take a step. In small calibers, it really is about shot placement.

Go for the 22-250! Ive got a friend that uses it for everything, hogs, yotes, deer, everything! Its his favorite rifle. To my knowledge its a very fast caliber. Almost every round will break up on impact. Its also great around livestock. What ever it hits first, is where the bullet stops. Its a great load for kids too. I dont think its that loud.

I'm not bad talkin' the 22-250, but if sound is a consideration then the 22-250 is one LOUD son-of-a-gun!!!!! I'd definately go with the 223, mine is a real tack-driver at 250 yds. It's a Remington Mod.700 bolt-action with a 24in. barrel. I really love that gun!!!! As far as the 222, my grandpa had one and it's getting harder and harder to get ammo on a regular basis. Especially if a few people in town need it at the same time, and is'nt that always the case when you really need something. JMO's, but good luck on your decision either way!!!!!!!

all the info I quoted came from "AMMO & BALLISTICS", "none of it was my opion" everyone has the right to buy whatever they want. personally, I think some calibers are to small for deer (with the exception of few execptional marksman) but that brings up another question, if you are hunting with (.222, .223) and you have a shot at a truly big animal, do risk non fatal shot or let it go because you don't have a big enough gun. now, back to the original question?? .223or.22-250??, I have both, I had the opportunity yesterday to go for coyotes (neighbor called and said the yotes were on a cow carcass) the shots would be 250yds. I took the .22-250 end result 2 dead. I am no way saying the .223 would not have done the job, I just felt more comfortable with .22-250. One last opion, about the short mag ect. the gun manufactures are increasing sales by introducing new calibers (good for stores too) but it pays to check ballistics before you buy. Not just what the muzzle velocity is, but what it is at 200yds etc. my .02

Don't know what I Was thinking when I typed that but I didnt mean that part LOL. In fact I just bought a AR15 Varmint Upper for just that.

I will say that the 223 wssm is the best one, but you still arnt comparing aples to aples, soft point boat tail and soft points are not the same thing.
This being said the 223 wssm is the best on papper, as soon as you stop looking at the chronograph and measuring drop at five hundred yards with a micrometer you will probably never notice the difference.
My vote would be for a 223 rem. They are cheap amo is everywere, and I dont really think the bullets need to be going any faster than that. I actualy load a 223 to shoot deer with and the slower bullets perform better than the fast ones.

redchevy, I agree with you, I own both (.223, .22-250) both by savage. when you look for ammo, there is a wide variety to choose from both of these calibers. my favorite to shoot was the winchester 45grain JHP, I could shoot 1/4 inch groups, that particular round will not be availabe till later this year because WINCHESTER is supplying to the war, this I was told by two different ammo dealers.

Any of the calibers listed will kill coyotes just fine. Everybody gets their jock in a knot over a few more fps or what have you. I know just as many people who think the .22-250 is a lousy round for coyotes and favor the .223 as I know that feel exactly the opposite! Everybody has an opinion and 10,000 reasons and facts that they're the absolute authority.
Here's my .02.. Ditch 'em both and get a .243. All the internet cowboys can talk about blown up critters and stuff and why that's a bad round, but I've never had a blowout yet using 100gr softpoints on all kinds of stuff-even coons. Not to say that it won't happen, but if you hunt Texas you're probably not in it for the fur anyway! I've hunted with .223, .22-250, .243 and many much bigger calibers, and I've seen more critters get up and run with the .223 and .22-250 as well as the big stuff, than I have with the .243. BUT-I have another reason that I like the .243 best!
For the .223, I had intermittent 'bang-flop' results with various bullets, pretty much the same for the .22-250. I decided that I didnt' want to reload and work up loads for every rifle that I shoot-I'm just lazy. Once I started hunting with the .243 using Wallyworld over the counter 100gr corelokts, I found that I could hunt bobcats, coyotes, pigs, and deer all in the same day with the same rifle, same round.
Just my opinion to add onto the heap of the others...

The 220 swift will ruin the quiet, cheap, and readily available bullets, neat gun, but a bad choice if you ask me.

my son and nephews shoot 223 for deer and pigs and have never lost any, try to get them to shoot them in neck or in the vitals. the bullets blow right threw them they leave a good blood trail and they don't run far i dont't know why everyone so down on the 223.

I know there is already a ton of replies to consider but have you looked into the new .204 ruger? Its an extremely fast and accurate rifle great for varmint. Can use for hogs as well if you can place your shot right.

I also agree with pyledriver about the .243. Its one of the rifles I regularly hunt with and it is a very versatile cartridge. I use two different cartridges though. 100 grain for deer, and they have a smaller grain size also, I think its an 85 grain ballistic tip which always works great for me with smaller game like coyotes. Although I dont use the 243 for deer much anymore since I recently purchased a Browning A-Bolt Medallion .270 which I love!
