Thought some of you guys might like to see this. Believe everything you read and see about the TSS shot. I was skeptical until I shot some myself this afternoon. Impressive is an understatement on how this stuff patterns. This was the first run and only thru one choke. I'm sure we could dial it in even more with different chokes and straight 9 or 8 shot to increase our pellet counts. First was a 1 5/8oz load of 1oz of TSS #9's and 5/8oz of Hevi-Shot #7 1/2's. 559 pellets in this load total. 286 in a 10" circle at 40 yards. Next was a 2oz load of 1oz of TSS #9's and 1oz of TSS #7s. 527 pellets total in this load. 327 in a 10" circle at 40 yards.

That's a great pattern at 40 yards, but, you had better be right on if you shoot at a bird 25 or under. At 25 yards or less, you have a pattern of a softball. If you are slightly off, you will miss the bird. This is why I like a slightly more open pattern. At 40 yards with Rem. HD Wingmaster 6 shot and Rem. Hevi shot magnum 5 shot using an 870 SPS-T and a Jellyhead choke, I can put anywhere from 100 to 125 in a 10 inch circle. That is plenty to kill any turkey. I have a tight pattern at 25 and in, but not so tight that if I'm slightly off I will miss the bird. Some guys want to put as many pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards as possible, and that's fine, but that's not what it's all about.

Man I'm not a very good caller, so I shoot most my turkeys at 40-60 yards. I'm kidding. 100% the pattern of true TSS will be a softball at 20yards or so. That's the reason we duplexed some with Hevi-shot. The TSS seems to blow the Hevi-shot out giving you a more open pattern at closer ranges with the Hevi, but still a tight pattern down range with the TSS. I think it's the best of both worlds especially if hunting timber or thick brush like we do in MS, but the true TSS will work great for open areas like we hunt in West Texas and KS. My main goal of loading the TSS was to find a killer pattern for a 20ga. I couldn't get any 20ga loads in time for this weekend, so I just loaded up 5 shells or so for my 12ga. Hopefully after this weekend, I never have to carry the 12 again.

Is a turkey choke really necessary to kill a turkey? Or would a full choke suffice?

Yep a Full will work just have to know your range and know your gun. Heck alot of turkeys were killed before Turkey choke were invented. Our ancestors almost wiped them out. You just many not be able to reach out 40 yards

I'm pretty sure the "IC Choke" mentioned was referring to an "Indian Creek" brand choke, not an "Improved Cylinder" type choke. That's the brand I use.

Correct. Not an "Improved Cylinder", but "Indian Creek" choke with .665 constriction thru an SBE with 26" barrel. Guess I left out an important detail.
Got some 8 shot coming. Can't decide if I want to duplex a 20ga load with 9X7's, 9X8's, or go straigh 8's or 9's.
I'll post up the patterning results when I'm done.

I have hunted and shot turkeys for about 20 years. Around 60 birds. Never used anything but 2 3/4" lead #6 shot(Old Duck Loads) and my factory full choke Wingmaster.

That 9x7 load of TSS is gonna be an absolutely awesome load!!
I'd hate to be a turkey on the receiving end of it...

With TSS, a plain full choke is a very good way to go.

As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Finally got on some birds and got to use that TSS 2oz of #9 and #7. Killed two birds in one shot at around 35-40yds. Was aiming at the bird on the left. His head was jelly. The other bird was just behind and to his left. He dropped like a bag of bricks hit him and never flopped. This was a bird on the outside of my pattern. More than impressed with the results. I was skeptical of that small shot even though I knew the physics behind the heavier shot and the patterns I was getting. Not skeptical any more. These birds came in strutting, gobbling, running, etc. I bet they came from 500-600 yards as my buddy and I were working another bird in the field. They were about 300 yards away when they entered the field and we could see them. Took them about a minute to close the distance. Awesome hunt!

Great Birds BarneyWho! I've been re-thinking my rig (something other than a factory F choke) ever since I posted on one of your "Patterning" threads. Seems like every daymmm bird I've worked this year has stayed in that "Iffy" zone 40-45 yards. I've got one more tag to fill this year and hopefully I won't have to worry about that "Iffy" zone! Great job and Congrats! Cheers!

Great job and Congrats! Cheers! Thanks. Well as you can tell from my pattern testing 40-45 yards would be in the wheel house with the TSS in my opinion. If you aren't a reloaders, H13 thru a Pure Gold choke seems to throw some great 40-45 yard patterns. The main reason I went to the TSS was in case I misjudged a distance in those West Texas wheat fields. I didn't want to wound a bird. Well, that and if some birds just didn't want to close to that 30-40 yard distance and were just on the edge. Lights out custom calls are awsome. i had one made last year a nd love it. cant believe i would see them on here. hes outta arkansas He makes a great call. More than impressed with the AL over glass. I'm going to give a few more of his calls a try. A buddy of mine had a copper call made by another custom call maker this weekend. That thing puts off some sweet, sweet music. However, it just doesn't have the range to cut the wind if you hunt in the wind alot.
