This old gobbler has been in the same spot for 4 years. He's been yelped at A LOT. Slipped in behind him 45 minute before gobbling time and caught him roosted without a hen. He flew down, answered me and stutted straight to me.

Now those are some Hook's! Biggest I have seen was on a Rio that went 1-3/4" I called it in and It was my buddy and teammate Adrian's first bird ever! That same bird had a 13-3/4" beard! What's the longest beard you have taken Bama? I know those eastern's Grow long! My dad has only taken one turkey in his life and it was south of Knoxville TN. 1 single beard would go 8th I think in the state 15-7/8 or somethin' like that it was crazy long for a single beard! He won't even go get it measured cause he doesn't want anyone to touch it, so he has it in the top of his safe! lol!

Not a very heavy bird at all, but those spurs are something for an Eastern. I've killed my fair share of Easterns, but I have never come close to killing one with spurs like that. I guess he has lost some weight from all the strutting and chasing hens.

lastrutter bama made reference to the wt. of that turkey in one of his posts. in that part of the country every once and a while someone will kill a turkey like that one, long spurs, small body wt., usually darker in color, and the locals refer to them as a true "wild strain turkey." the first turkey i killed in alabama weighed 15lbs, very light for an eastern, and the locals all gathered round w/ talk of a wild strain bird.

whatever he was, a bird like that can make a season for you.

westtex , you are exactly right. I have killed 8 or 10 of these turkeys over the years and there is definately something different about them. They are much smaller, have somewhat darker plumage, and seem to grow longer, sharper spurs. I don't know if they are a "true wild turkey" as the oldtimers call them or some sort of subspecies or what. I kille one 3 years ago that weighed 13 1/2 pounds and had 1 1/2 inch spurs. A friend killed a 20 pounder the same morning and when they were put side by side differences were amazing.
Actually, now that I think about it,I killed the gobbler in this post only a 1/4 mile from where I killed the 13 1/2 pounder.

Inetersting stuff for sure.

Well......it could have happend. Besides, westex75's description Smaller and Darker (than an Eastern) is the descripton I've heard just about everybody ever use to describe an Oceola......and I've sure seen some 10penny nail spurs on those Oceola's! grin
