I hunted for years with a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44mag, with a 10-1/2" bull barrel. I was good to 100+ yds (open sights), and the recoil wasn't punishing at all. Deccelerator grips make a big difference. For practice and to get comfortable with the pistol, she could shoot .44 specials, then move up to .44 mags, and wouldn't really notice that much difference.

I would not recommend the 45ACP for deer at all. A lot of deer, especially Texas size deer, have been taken with a 357 magnum. As long as you use a quality bullet and the heaviest factory load such as the 158grain, and keep your shots at under 50 yards, you should be OK as long as your marksmanship is good.
