What are thoughts on Feeders at 300#,600#,800# or even 1200# LBS.
I am considering a large feeder for Protien and Corn. Protien from now till Sept. Then convert the unit to broadcasting Corn for the Fall and Winter season.
If it is possiable without any problem useing Brodcast year round. Told to mix protien and corn together to brodcast year round.
If broadcasting out of feeder pen am concerned about attracting Hogs as well as Deer.
Have looked into these Brands. Texas Hunter, All Seasons,Sweeney and BossBuck. Any feedback on these Brands or this type of feeding would realy be helpfull. I hunt 400 miles from my home. Saving the cost of having to feed every 30 to 60 days would offset the added cost of a larger feeder. Your thoughts Please...... Thanks

are you looking at a feeder with a motor on it, or a pipe that comes down with a tray?
if it has a motor DO NOT mix protein in the feeder. it will stop-up the feeder. the way it sounds is it is a feeder with a pide and a tray.
If you will be going to the lease quite often i would go with the 800 lb. unless if there is not much $$$ difference between the 800 and the 1200.
just my .02

I agree with yellowcat, I do not mix corn and protein together in a spin-type feeder with a motor. I have had a lot of clogging problems. Any good quality brand of feeder with 300# capacity will work fine. I have 5 of these and I have them feed 6 seconds twice a day and they will last approximately 3 months at that rate. I spin them longer during deer season. All of my feeders have digital timers, which I highly recommend. My oldest one is a Sweeney, which I really like, but the leg system is not as strong as the other brands. The others are feeders that I had made for me that have the Remington digital timers on them. They also work very well.

As for a protein feeder, I have 3 of the Texas Hunter protein feeders and I am very happy with them. I like the Texas Hunter protein feeder because you can fill it without a ladder but it is still high enough where hogs don't bother it. It has a 300# capacity too and when the deer are really "hitting" it in the spring and summer, they will empty it in about 30 days. In the fall it lasts for a couple of months.

I also agree about mixing protein and corn with a broadcast feeder is not a good idea. I have studied feeders pretty closely are here are some thoughts:

For what you are trying to accomplish with large volume feeders, the BossBuck ""convertable" might be your best bet. You can buy the corn broadcast feeder and the protein adapter and switch them out when you want to. BossBuck uses "The Timer", which is a good, dependable digital timer. The only thing that concerns me about BossBuck is the leg system, for 1000 lbs, it looks a little light to me. That said, I do like the fact that is is HDPE and will never have to be painted.

Another brand to consider is Outback feeders, they are built like a tank and also use "The Timer."

As mentioned, the Remington/BA Products timer is also very good.

Whatever brand you choose, reliability is the key when you cant visit as often as you like. Made sure you get a good solar panel with a protected cable.

If you decide to go with a seperate protein feeder, there are tons of good choices, they are less worrisome because there are fewer things to go wrong when you are 400 miles away!

The biggest one that you can afford. You can broadcast protein feed, just NOT the pellets. We fed a blend of soybeans, peas & corn. The deer ate it up.

My thanks to Yellowcat,Lone Ranger,Big John,BWB and UVC for your input.
Big John I am leaning toward the BossBuck 1200#. My thoughts are to Protien feed With a corn mix with the Tube untill Sept, then convert it to Spin Feed till seasons end in Jan. Starting with the corn mixed with protien to get them use to it then bumping it up to mostly Protien.
UCH, can you tell me more about the non pellet protien 1st that I've heard of please explain. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to everyone here. keep it coming.

There is a feed store in Cut & Shoot, TX that sells this blended feed. It contains corn, soybean & peas. Works great in a broadcast feeder. I think the name is Ram Rod Inc. Or something like that.
