My husband is really into hunting and uses this site, I've never been around guns or hunting before so I registered to try and learn something about it. Any advice?

Go to a gun range and learn how to shoot before you try and learn to hunt is my $0.02 worth

... and that's about the best advise I can think of. Learn gun safety and shooting proficiency first. Might want to look at 'kill zones' on the game you will be hunting as well. You will pick up a lot of great information off of the site. Good folks here. Best of luck.

Welcome to the site. You can probably learn alot from your husband as experience is the best teacher. Take a hunters safety course 1st and foremost since that will give you alot of the basics. Other than that just study every aspect of your interest with every available means.
ENJOY IT, that way you'll never get tired of learning.

IowaGal, making a guess that you are an Army wife, try Ft Hood, they have a rifle range and a skeet range, and I believe some other outdoor recreational facilities. Which will save a bundle of money. If not check in with the local gun shops they will be able to help stear you in the right direction for learning how to shoot. As for as hunting the advice is read a lot of the old threads on here, just don't take them all as gospel. Marvin

Welcome, both to The Forum, and to hunting. I second PK's advice, take the Hunter Safety course(depending on your age, you may need to anyway, to be able to hunt.), and stay involved on here. Do not be afraid to ask questions, as there is only ONE dumb question, and that is the one not asked. There are some really great folks on here and they have a lot of really good information, just develope a tolerance for BS as there is plenty of that.

I talked my wife into trying hunting years ago and dont regret it one bit. She killed a doe her first year and she was hooked! Now she bow hunts and turkey hunts with me and i love it. She is now my life partner and hunting partner all rolled up in one! P.S. its also a lot easier to get hunting funds when your wife is a hunter.

There are some programs out there like Women in the Outdoors that help. http://www.womenintheoutdoors.org/wito/?SUBSITE=witoThey held a meeting a few years back and when my wife joined it helped out a lot introducing her into the sport of hunting. We hunt together a little bit, but she really enjoys the group get-togethers with the Women in Outdoors. They have some sessions on shooting skills, hunting, camping and a variety of other things. This may help out if you don't have a bunch of friends to get together with to go out and hunt. Maybe there are a few women on here that can get together with you and help you out too. I have seen that work well on other forum get-togethers.

You might do with your husband what I did with my Daughter as I was teaching her to hunt. We would go out shooting of course, she took her hunters safety course & smoked most of the guys in the shooting dept. (proud Dad!!) especially. But go out after Deer season (assuming that is the species) and learn their tracks and markings such as scrapes and rubs, hunt for shed antlers, all of that will not only be a great learning experiance but will also show you where you probably need to be hunting next year. My Wife does not hunt but loves to go with me after season on scouting trips. To me that is the best time to scout and see where the Bucks have been making there rub lines and to find there bedding areas. Good luck and Welcome.

The Hunter's Ed program is a good place to start, but TPWD also offers a Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) Workshops. Every workshop includes a core curriculum of classes which include the shooting sports, camping, backpacking, outdoor cooking, archery, plant i.d., birdwatching, introduction to firearms and hunting, map & compass, outdoor survival, orienteering, flytying and outdoor first-aid. Dependent upon the workshop location we can offer additional classes like horseback riding, sailing, kayaking, boat handling, fishing, and falconry. There are a couple coming up in March and April. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/bow/index.phtml

Also I know there is hunting right there on Fort Hood. I am not sure if it's all bow hunting back there or if they have gun hunts as well. I am sure they have both. But I know there are some good deer back there. And I know there were feral hogs out there about 10 years ago when a buddie of mine was stationed at fort hood.
Assumeing that you want to Hunt deer or hogs. I like hunting things to eat. And like the others have said, figure out what gun or "weapon" you want to use and learn to shoot it like second nature. Pratice, pratice, pratice...
Best of luck, welcome to the forum..
