Ok Turkey Hunters If you in a area where you know there are Turkeys how long do you wait in your set up before you move or go to another area. Lets assume on this day no gobbles, yelps or sign of anykind.

If it isn't windy, I wait 20minutes. If it is windy, I may wait 45 minutes.

I'm like a bird dog....wake up...couple of nervous bird dog shites...open the kennel door and WHOOSH I'm off trying to strike a bird that will work to the call. My theory is that if they ain't talking there isn't a lot of reason to float call trying to strike a bird so in the afternoon, I'll usually go to an area where I know the birds like to hang out, set the decoys out, get the gobbler lounger (a camo beach chair....very comfortable) in the shade behind some cover and simply blind call every 5-10 minutes. I've killed quite a few birds like this that came in dead silent. Sometimes it's happend in 30 minutes....sometimes I've sat there for an hour and half....sometimes I've fallen asleep and woke up and had a bird in the decoys.....sometimes I've woke up and scared the crap out of myself and the bird! Bottom line is if I'm in an area I know they like, they will eventually be something come thru there. I'm not going to kill a bird sitting back at the camp drinking....or will I????

Thanks we usually spend a hour at least in a spot. Last weekend I saw a jake all by his lonesome late in the afternoon. Heck he scared me as much as I scared him walking down the trail. We went back on Saturday and sat and called and sat and called for probably and hour and a half. Not a peep. But I guess that his why they call it hunting and not just shooting.

Hell on Saturday I sat in a spot for 3 hours, never heard a thing. But I k ow they are there. Went back that evening and called up 3 gobblers and 5 jakes. Will it always work that way? No. But gobblers got good hearing, they can hear your call from a long way and might not be responding but working your way.

From the varied responses I think it proves why Turkey hunting is so much fun. You are never sure what they will do and they will do exactly what do you not expect them to do.

*raises hand* depends if early or late in season.. are you only hunting longbeards..
i learned a long x ago..to be consistent u cant be afraid to move or blow a bird out.. here is an idea: float calling a ridge call-listen for 10 mins..200 yds repeat.. get to end or a predetermined distance and backtrack..calling-stopping-calling dont be suprized if a bird is waiting for you! this seems to be reealy effective on mid morning birds...at least ive had success with this stradegy

we sit just like we do when deer hunting most the time, cause we know where the birds frequent... last weekend birds didn't respond to calls at all. most all came in silent. and none have been called in that we know of. but still have 3 dead birds so far out of 5 days of hunting. still waiting on my first bird!

Probably going to give it a try this weekend. I will be hunting in unfamiliar territory so I will have to cover alot of ground. I would say this weekend will be alot of scouting with a gun.

This worked pretty well. We called our way in and when we got back we had birds in the area.
