Not an expert but the 17hmr is a pistol round and a rifle round. That may have something to do with it. I have heard of people being turned down for pistol ammo if they were not 21.

Hmmmmm....sometimes those guys behind the counter aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer anyway. I had one tell me back in December that they weren't going to stock handgun ammo anymore because after the 1st of the year handguns were going to be banned. I told him I hadn't heard that, and he said it had been all over the news and all the stores were doing the same thing???

Academy has several "in house" policies.....
I was at the one in College Station when a 20yo marine combat veteran tried to by an ar-15..
"sorry store policy is that you have to be 21 to buy an asault rifle"
Im sure that has some thing to do with it, the gun shop in my home town would sell me .22lr when I was 18 if I brought the rifle in with me(which I think is fair); and walmart will ask you if its for a handgun or rifle before they sell you .22 ammo if you are under 21.

Wally World asks me if it's for a rifle or pistol every time and I'm 21 x 2.

Wow I've never been carded for ammo but get carded the minte I walk into a liquor store. I guess its up to the people working in the stores in your area.
