I have always been told to just save the money you would pay for a policy and put it in a savings account to draw interest. That way you have an emergency fund for you and for the dog.

There is no interest to be had these days but still... just plan to set aside an emergency fund 'just in case.' I lost a dog this past January, but the bill was still well over $3K at A&M. Even tho' I lost him, I have the peace of mind knowing I tried to do all that I could for him.

i agree on a 6 month CD if i put $5k dollars in I will only grow $50. That is THE BEST CD you can find and its only 1.75%. So saving is not an option. I really think insurance is a good deal but who knows. Hopefully more people chime in on this issue

It's way to expensive. Put some aside each month and you will be way ahead.

Don't know how many dogs you have, but with 3 or 4 it's too expensive. I've had 3 occasions when it cost me from $1000 to $3000 over 35 years. Putting money away for these seems much better way to go than $50 to $150 it would cost just to get some help on regular visits. Like fannies, we all have one and this is just my opinion.

Purina Insurance
7 dogs @ 55 per month = 385 per month = 4620 per year and a 1000 dollar deductible per dog. Also it covers 80% after deductible. I believe it is a waste. In 15 years I have only had 2 dogs that I spent over 1500 on in any one year. I just do not see how I can make it pay for itself or even come close.

True. I only have one dog. $35-40 a month doesnt seem bad but then again if you just have money set aside. it comes out to like $400 a year plus the deductible for insurance for 1 dog with a 80% coverage after either a 100 or 250 annual deductible.

Using the figures above, I calculated my vet costs for 2009 with and without insurance:

Without Insurance: $900
With Insurance: $700

So it would have saved me $200 dollars. Obviously, the savings are greater the more you spend, example if I had spent $3500, I would have saved $2280:

Without Insurance: $3500
With Insurance: $1220

However on the other side of the spectrum, if you only spend $500 per year, then its not worth the cost.

In my opinion, I tend to lean towards the don't buy insurance crowd.

I think what is more important than getting insurance is finding a good vet that won't medicate your dog at every opportune moment. This will go a long way in keeping your annual, routine costs down. Find an older, experienced vet that doesn't have a large staff and fancy building. However, this may be easier said than done...I'm still searching. frown

Well said. My vet also has a payment plan. If need be, I can write post dated checks if I need to.

Yeah to me it now seems it would only be worth it if a severe injury occurs requiring surgery. Other then that no, but then again you never know what might happen. With one vet I use I have up to a month to pay it off no interest. So that is good, I will not pay interest when I dont have to

I have the money in my checking account, but they all take credit cards. You can pay it off that way.

I don't think I've spent $3,000 in 40 years.

I would recommend putting money aside before you ever buy a dog. Most of the time it's twice the amount the puppy cost. Then keep adding to it. I wouldn't want a cash flow problem to ever dictate my dogs medical treatment.
I've used the same vet for years, and when she retires I dread looking for a new one. Last month She charged me $11.00 to give my dog his parvo booster and squeeze his anal glands.

The reason we use her is because she's good. I made the mistake of collar breaking my older V one day before he was due for his snake shot. He was on edge and starting thinking the vets were out to get him. She had me bring him in a couple time a week, just to hang out in the lobby so he wouldn't be so upset on visits. She would come out to the lobby bringing him treats, pat and talk to him. The vet techs would weigh him, give him more treats. Needless to say he likes the vet again.

I have wrote a few post dated checks to my vet also. No way would insurance be worth while with six dogs. Just put it back in case you need it for something else. up

I've got eight, between the hog dogs and blood tracker, and I can't make it worth my while either. I just keep some money back and an "uh-oh" credit card on hand that doesn't get used for anything else. you just never know when a wreck will happen.

You can say that about any insurance. Go w/o insurance, and you take risk short term and hope nothing happens, long-term nothing happens, you are ontop. More expensive the insurance, less risk you take, more expensive your dog, more risk you take.

JMO, the insurance is too much, not worth it. Also remember insurance is not something you should expect to make money on, insurance lowers your risk for short term out of pocket expense, long-term the average insured person will pay more, otherwise the insurance product would not be profitable, unless Obama is running it. hammer
