I was wondering if anyone builds them and what spinner and motor do you use? Any other info would be greatly appreciated also.

I was thinking about building a metal one that attaches to a 2" receiver and holds around 100lbs. I have access to cost pricing on the metal, have my own mig welder and time to do it.

I think the Spin Tech would be best since they close up. Have read about the springs loosing resistance over time (not a big deal to me). It will be used at the deer lease regularly and want to make it sturdy and reliable. We'd probably use it on ATV/ SXS and pick-up trucks.

Anyone use a different spinner or recommend one that doesn't loose corn while driving?

I bought the 50 pound model from Academy for less than $100 and built my own mount. I run mine on the front of a Jeep. Works great and you can't build the feeder for less. I get more action from my "spread corn" than my feeders. Don't try to get the "play" out of the mount to the 2 inch reciever - a little shaking actually helps.

I plan on making a spreader that holds approx. 100lbs. I can get the steel at cost. I just need to spend the time fabricating it and buy the motor assy. I'll be lucky to have $50 into the whole thing from my estimate on material and motor. Heck of alot cheaper than the $289 ones I've been seeing on the internet.

I do understand the movement of the receiver will help keep the corn funneling out. It's like shaking the feeder to get the corn down to the spinner. It's like a different dinner bell goin' off also. I'm gonna design it like a funnel at the bottom so most of the corn will get used up and not lay in the corners. I'm gonna leave atleast a 10" flat section at the bottom to attach the motor and deflector. I could probably use a piece of mudflap and rivet it to the bottom instead of using more steel (less weight). Although, the sound of the corn being slung will wake up some of the critters. wink

Yes, I've had more luck w/ road/ sendero feeding than the feeder also. I'm guessing the deer get smarter thru the years of seeing ones family member fallin' to a loud noise. rifle

I think I'm gonna install a lighted switch into the wiring so that I don't have to plug and unplug the socket. Also, I can see the switch w/o a flashlight. Don't want to wear out the cig socket on the Polaris or truck either.

This will be used by a few lease members and want to make sure it is durable, but not too heavy. We're not getting any younger. LOL

Any idea on the guage of galvanized steel I should use? I plan making a frame to set the hopper in and tack into place. So, it really doesn't have to be too thick to support the weight of the corn. Gonna use 2 clasps on the sides to hold the lid on. I've thought about an elastic cover, but I think the mice and other barn critters would have a field day w/ it.

I was thinking about making it similar to a hitch hauler for the height from the receiver, but angle it up a little further to give more ground clearance for ditch crossings, hills, rocks or any other obstacles. Never know if ya ever get on a lease that has hilly terrain or rocks. Not gonna be a problem this year. smile

Any more ideas that I've not mentioned? Anything you'd do special or change?

I'd use 1/8" frame material and 16ga sheet metal. Buy black steel and fab it up first then get it galvanized if you want it to last.

I was thinking on the line of 1/16" galv and will use some leftover 1 1/2" angle iron w/ 1/8" thickness to frame it from another project. I want it to be rugged and not too concerned about the extra weight. I only want to build one and not have to fix it due to stress from the weight of the corn and bouncing around a lot. The receiver tube is from another old project that is 2" square tubing w/ 1/8" wall.

Do you guys weld the entire seams or a small bead and then use caulking in the seams?

Do you use metal for a deflector towards the tailgate or some other material? I don't want the corn to corn blast my paint off. I was thinking metal since I'll have some leftover, but was also thinking about a piece of rubber from possibly a mudflap.

Would the sound of the corn and metal be too loud for early morning road feeding?

Anything I'm missing or might want to change from your past experience/s?

I would wrap the galvanized around a frame and rivet it together. If you weld galvanized DONT BREATH THE FUMES. Overlap it an inch or so and you should be fine.

Yes, I know about the toxic fumes. I'll be welding outside w/ a fan to keep the fumes away as much as possible.

Why wrap it and rivet? It that to stay clear from the fumes? I want it to be very durable and last for a long time w/o repairing. I think the rivets would loosen up over time.

Whats the point of getting pre-galvanized steel if you are going to cut and weld it? Welding anything galvanized is a PITA.

I took a 25gal grease barrel mounted a spintech on the bottom and made my own funnel. .... spintech saves a ton of corn or if you want to use something else just put the amount of corn that you want to throw out in the feeder when you get to the blind.......

Then i bolted the barrel to my game left/hanger that fits into the 2" receiver...the game lift breaks down into two parts so its not so heavy and the barrel bolts to the bottom section......

I wired a lighted switch on the dash of my truck...run the wire all the way back underneath to the feeder and plug it in to the feeder wire .....

Did the same thing to the four wheeler with out the game lift... mounted a lighted switch to the side of the barrel ...wires in side and run it out to the battery...... works great for us!!

I have a buddy that works at a metal fab shop. He's cutting the metal w/ shears and doin' all of the bending. All I have to do is weld it together.

Not a big deal welding anything to me. I actually enjoy it.

Went to Academy and they didn't have a Spin Tech. frown Will check BPS the next time I'm there. If they don't have one I'll be ordering it somewhere.

Should have the metal next Tuesday to start the project. banana

Bought one from Sears for $116 including shipping. Was listed for $98+ a $10 mail-in rebate. It's suppose to have a rebate w/ it. Haven't opened the box yet.

Still waiting on the steel to get cut to specs and will be a welding soon!!

Thanks. I want mine to be large enought to hold almost 100lbs of corn. That one would need to be filled after 1/2 pass on the sendero.

Still waiting on the steel. My buddies f-i-l has been too busy to get it cut and bent. No hurry yet. Still refinishing the diningroom table and chairs. Hope to have this project done in another week or so.

Since you have an XP you may want to look at this design. I got one for mine. The main reason is because it's low profile and allows you to open the tailgate to the bed on the Ranger while it's mounted in the receiver hitch. Click the link towards the bottom to open up the flier with a bigger picture.

If I were you I would go a little farther and install a wireless remote, I have made thousands of road feeders, let me tell you the most annoying thing in the morning is messing with a cord. You can hardwire it that works, but you still have wiring, with the wireless you can still use a hardwire remote, but I take the feeder of the truck and use it when I bow hunt as a sendero feeder for pigs, deer, whatever

Two beers or not two beers, what was the question?

My intentions is to make it work for the Polaris and also for my pick-up. I plan on making it so that I can lower my tailgate on my truck and then it would definately work for the Polaris since the tailgate is smaller.

For now, I'm gonna see what the wiring is like for the first year and make modifications from then on. I do like the wireless remote idea. I guess "The Remote" system will work and all I'd need to do is hook up a 12 volt battery to the Spin Tech. Only bad thing is it doesn't have a storage area for a battery/ timer like most other feeder motor assy's. Would have to make a box for the battery and remote transmitter.

Sorry I do not have a better picture but here is how I did the one that I built for my ranger. My expierience is that if you try to make work everywhere you won't be happy. (We'd probably use it on ATV/ SXS and pick-up trucks.) The insert to the reciever should be 3/16" square tubing.

I've found that my game hoist made for both my truck and Polaris work perfectly either way. My plans are to use the same hitch dimensions for the feeder also. So, it should work the same.

The square tubing is 3/16" wall and is left over from the game hoist. Only bad thing is it's gonna be heavy, but heavy duty also. wink
