im sure this has been asked here before, so im sorry to ask it again. what is the deal with using one on public water(the coast specifically) i bought a nice 14 foot aluminum boat from a garage sale for dirt cheap. it didnt come with a title. a couple of people told me that all i would need to do is go to TPWD and apply for a lost title. i called and the lady that answered didnt seem to care too much. she quickly responded that only the original owner can apply for a lost title, and if i wasnt the original owner, the boat wouldnt be able to ever be titled again. is this true or is there some kind of salvage title i can maybe get? any help would be appreciated.

Do y'all know how much work you have to do on a boat beofre you can say it was "homemade"? I think that's a good option for getting a title on cheap beat up little boats. Just looking if anyone has tried.

Are there still TX numbers on it? Or give them the serial # and I think they should be able to look up at least who the last registered owner was. Then you may have to contact that person(hopefully they're the original owner, or see who they bought it from). Then have them file for lost title... yea pretty much it's a mess!!!

I forgot about that^^
that's a great option! Probably the best/easiest route.

technically the transom is homemade. the wood was all rotten so i replaced it with fiberglass coated birch wood. i will check into this tomorrow. i bought the boat thinking if i couldnt get it titled, i would just use it to fish one of our stock tanks. ive got all the stuff to make a cool duck boat out of it, but i dont want to waste it on the boat until i figure out if i can use it on public water.

then, when the 1st g.w. stops you and wants to see the registration, oops "not home made" it just isn't worth hauling home a boat without correct paper work, unless you are going to use it on a private tank ect. BEEN THERE DONE THAT, you can't even get a mechanics lein and get one.

IMO your only option is to file for lost title, and hope it has never been registered.

If it does not have a serial number claim it is your it has always been yours you have had it for years. Stick with your story.

Home made boat. Law Dawg looks over the boat before they give you a title. Dont question his intelligence, and tell him you made a 14 foot flat bottom .

There is no way to title that boat without the title holder signing the affidavit. You can go to the tpwd office and they will tell you the same thing everyday if the week. Ain't happening.

You can run the hull or TX numbers yourself on the tpwd site. Of it has never been titled then you can obtain a tilte. If it has been titled then contact them and take the affidavit to them to get signed. Technically he could tell you to bring his boat back if he were so inclined.

If you try to pass it off as a homemade boat your going to take a hit. You are to take all of your materials receipts and a warden inspects it prior to issueing a permit to title. You could piss him off and get yourself arrested or if your lucky only a citation.

Start with running the hull umber and go from there.

Bonded title

I'am in the process of getting one right now on a boat and motor I bought right here on this forum. The previous owner bought the boat and motor from a garage sale from an elderly man, who was the original owner. The original owner never tried to title the Boat or motor. The boat had a TX# that ended in AA which came back to a dealer. I had a warden here in Gonzales Co. run the serial # on the boat and the serial# on the motor, they didn't come back to anyone.

I went to TPWD in Austin in person and explained the situation to the lady in charge of titling and registration. Prior to getting there I had all the proper forms filled out correctly, with a Bill of Sale and all my ducks in line. She said that all I would have to have was an Affidavit of Fact form filled out from the seller stating that the original owner is no longer able to be located.

She stated that when she received the Affidavit of Fact Form she would call me and tell me how much money to send her and that she would send me my title and registration and TX#.

She told me that I was lucky that the boat and motor had never been titled or registered. If it had, I would have had to send a certified letter to the original owner informing him that I was trying to title the boat.

It can be done, but I would not want to go through this again.

If you buy a boat or motor make sure you can get a clear title before you pay for it. up

This is why when people advertise to sell a boat they always claim "Clear title in hand".

if your boat does not have serial numbers on it for some reason,
you can take it to some parks offices and they will issue one for you, but get ready to pay. it cost me around $100

$25 for inspection fee, title fee plus tags.

Then they will issue you some HIN#

but if there is a s/n on it check out this link https://apps.tpwd.state.tx.us/tora/legal.jsf

you can find the owner without calling, if it was ever titled

hope this helps

^That is great info^

If it has a serial or TX # you can look it up on the TPWD website and see who has title on it. If there is no title on it you can go apply for one.

The last 2 digits of the serial # is the year it was built. Just an FYI.

this is pretty much the same way i did mine......i had to send a certified letter to the last known address of the owner with the paperwork for title transfer..... it came back and undelivered so i had to send the unopened letter to TPWD......i took me a while but i got a title for my boat.....

It is a headache for sure, I have had more boats than cars and trying to title a boat and motor that has been previously titled and the titles have been lost is a complete PIA. Be patient with the clerks, if you make them mad they will make you miserable, stay in touch with the previous owners and check the TX numbers and serial numbers against the states database.

Check into antique boat status, I had an old Lone Star that I restored without the title. I had to fill out several forms and the state gave me a new number and title, it took a while but it was legal in the end.

Just get your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, etc to kick you in the nuts. Much less painful that trying to register a boat with a lost title.
