With horses on a property, will deer feed in the same pastures, or will they cross the pasture that the horses are in? How does it affect the deer?

Last year was the first year I hunted around horses. My stand faces away from the a pasture they feed in. During one hunt I had a group of doe come out in front of me. They were looking toward the pasture the whole time and after 5 minutes or so went back the way they came. Never came out again. I got out of my stand to see why they looked so nervous about and saw that the horses were feeding in the pasture. That was the only time I got out and looked. The horses could have been there when the deer came out on other hunts, but I never looked again. Sorry for the length, but thats my only experience.

Well I was gonna post a pic but I guess I deleted it. I had a game cam pic of deer and my horses in the same pic at night. I've had them at the feeder when horses came by and they didn't leave immediately but they didn't really look comfortable either.

I have a few game camera pics with deer and my horses are in the background of the picture, no affect whatsoever on the deer.

It's only a problem if you shoot one of the landowner's horses or if they get into your feed pen, knock down your feeder, eat all the corn, and colic! LMAO

Seriously, I've hunted plenty of pastures that had horses in them and I never really noticed that the deer paid them much mind at all.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I shot my first deer while a horse stood beside my ground blind. no kidding around, the horse watched me take the shot and there were 5 does under the feeder.

I wouldn't think it would bother them. i remember hearing quite a few years back about a older man who hunted deer off of a trained bull and would ride him up to shooting range and harvest his deer. If my memory serves me correctly the guy had to stop doing that I don't remember why though

I have 8 horses here at my house and the deer will graze the same pasture the horses do. I have a seperate pasture with a creek bottom that I keep the horses out of so they dont eat my corn and founder. The deer here dont mind the horses but a buddy had some cows out in the back and I wasnt getting any pics from the trail cam. Soon as the cows were gone the deer started showing up on the trail cam within 3 days.

i have a lease with horses, and they have not been any problem at all. they are the best livestock to have on a lease,if you had a choice.deer do not pay them any attention other than to look up and see what they are.

my problem w/ horses is people turning horses on to my place since there is no market for them. They get into my protien and destroy it to no end. How they can walk straight I have no idea. Ive got yelled at for giving a horse two coffee cans of oats before. Unlimited protien should really founder them.

Horses are a pain in the rear. Everything better have a pen. They chase the feed trailor around and without someone watching they will bust every bag of corn open while you fill feeders. Probably like cows. (A few is fine but a bunch and the deer tend to avoid).

Well, I'm gonna chime in again. Just pulled game cam pics and found a series of pics with 2 does. First shot is them coming in. Then eating. then heads jerked up. then turned 180 degrees looking. Then gone. then horses coming to the feeder pen. That series of pics was almost like a video and with the time stamp you could see it unfolding.

Horses and deer get along together but the horses may bother your feeders. My dad, in the 50's. when only bucks were legal, shot bucks from a horse while checking the cattle, sheep or goats. That 35 remington. carried in a saddle scabbord. picked many a buck out of a patch of scrub oaks.

I love animals. In soup and right next to the mashed potatoes.

ya they "get along" but they dont like to hang out together... as in if there are deer somewhere, and horses come that direction, the deer will walk off.... same way with cows, now just having them on the same property will not affect ur hunting.

so it really shouldnt be a problem if we put a large enough feeder pin around the feeder?

I 100% back Brandon A. I hunt with horses (9) and the deer just move on off when the horses show up. When both are feeding in the pastures, they constantly look up at each other to see where each other are at. I have never seen horses give in to the deer, but many times have seen deer give in to the horses.
Same with cows, but the cows dont even care where the deer are at. All they care about is eating.
Build a strong fence around your feeder. That should eliminate any horse or cow from getting in.
