Not sure where to post this. But I havent used a Gunsmith since I lived in Missouri. Looking for a skilled Gunsmith that is resonable cost here in Texas. I am in the Mesquite area. But If a gunsmith is really good I wouldnt mind driving 50 miles or more. If you know of a Gunsmith that you really like please post information here.

I have used Blueing Bros. on Old London in Mesquite. Rudy did a nice job on a muzzle break for me a few years back. He did one for a friend as well, and he was happy with it.

I've also seen good work from Lone Star Guns in Plano. They re-blued a S&W 44mag for us that came out wonderful.
McClelland's has done some work for a few buddies, all were happy.

Sig226fan, as recommended, would be one to check out. Since he IS a board member. I've never met him, or dealt with him aside from here. But he sure seems to know his stuff.

Doc's Guns in Carrollton has done most if not all my work in the last 10-15 years except for some specific stuff done by Ray Zipper up here at Lake Texoma.
Doc can do the minor cleanup to a complete full custom, and has been in the same place for the last 30+ years. IMO a gunsmith who does most of his business in repairing guns, and not selling new or used guns is who I look to able to depend on to fix what I need done. You can buy guns from lots of places...but only a handful of guys can fix 'em...and then even fewer of those guys are more than just a parts swapper. Both Doc Jones and Ray Zipper can build a gun from scratch and do on a regular basis...and thats what I look for ...YMMV.

I have been lucky and only had to make three trips to the gunsmith. I took all three to McBride's here in Austin, and they did a great job on all of them. Two of them were switching the safety from RH to LH on Remington 870's, and the other was getting a 20 year old Stoeger imported .22LR Luger to fire after it had quit working. I'm not sure what they did besides giving it a thorough cleaning, but it works great now.

I don't know the name of the guy, but there was this guy on like Bedford Road when I lived in Hurst. He had a little hole in the wall shop and a guy at work told me about him.

I walked in one day and asked him about making some modifications to my Colt 1991A1. Basically I told I just wanted some Chip McCormick drop-in stuff.

He went into this spill about how drop-ins don't always work, and about how working on another man's gun was kind of personal, like his woman, then he said, "I can tell you this, it won't be cheap and won't be quick." Then he told me to bring it in and we could talk about it.

I thanked him and got the hell out of there.

In the end, I made the modifications myself and I won't lie, I ran into some pitfalls, worked on it off and on for about a year. So it wasn't quick, but once you know how, it was easy. I spent about $150, which I consider cheap for what I got out of it.

Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

Didnt really get the point of that story. Are you saying the guy is good or bad, do it yourself or what?

Ok, so if you go to somebody and ask them a question, and they tell you, "it won't be cheap and it won't be quick."

What would you think?

To me it sounded like, "boy, you have a purdy mouth."

I felt like I was going to get screwed. I mean it's not like I was having Chip McCormick himself work on it.

Patrick Sweeney has some good books on gunsmithing. For basic work, I'd do it myself.

I second Doc's. I have not ever used anyone else though, so I don't have anyone to compair him to. He was able to put a trigger job and a muzzle brake on my 300 RUM the week before deer season and did it in 2 days. The threads he put on the barrel are perfect and look like they came from the factory that way.
