I found this lease in East Texas for 3 guns at $800 per gun, so I emailed him some questions and asked how many acres it was. He replied back with 20 acres. I replied back with "3 guns on 20 acres?" to then he replied "Yes" so I quickly replied back "no thanks".
Are people that money hungry? My goodness, it's almost as if you'll be shooting at the same deer.
How many acres per gun do you look for? I was thinking at least 50 acres per gun with 100 being ideal.

As always the answer is, it depends on the location and layout of the land.
I would think 50 each for rifle hunters would be the absolute minimum but I know thats not the case.

Depends on location, hill country 1 to every 200, panhandle 1 to ever 1000.

I hunt the SE panhandle area and I try for 500 ac/gun. Alot of the landowners up there think more like hill country landowners of 150ac/gun.

Better question might be how many bucks to take per acre?
Theory says to take care of your herd, no more than one buck taken per 500 acres. That sort of messes up the 3 or 4 guns for 200 acre type deals.
I'm not sayin', to each his own, I don't have an answer, I'm just sayin'.

Man im a land surveyor and we stake out oil well locations and we do most of it around livingston in a lil town called Leggett and its mainly big timber tracks and those guy's will set their stands and feeders 250 to 300 feet apart i literally threw a rock from one past the next one. imo i think its crazy but it doesn't at all surprise me for east texas

We harvested 1 buck for every 50 acres and 1 doe to 75 acres in 2009 and still have too many deer.

There isn't one right answer for that question. Too many variables...

I'm not sayin', to each his own, I don't have an answer, I'm just sayin'. That is definitely way off for a lot of areas. We are taking more like 1 doe per 70-80 acres, and maybe 1 buck per 400 acres, although we are allowed more bucks than that.

Almost every buck we take is mature. So usually just one buck, and it is mature. We are allowed to shoot somewhere around 1 buck (cull or trophy) per 125-150 acres.

How many acres per gun do you look for? I was thinking at least 50 acres per gun with 100 being ideal. I think that each lease is different so one unified answer would not fit everyone. I'm not sure I could answer that question indefinitely, but the one thing I could say for sure is that 3 guns on 20 acres is nuts no matter where you are hunting. I think that must be some landowner that has never leased out his property and is very money hungry.
